Would you have approached this person and told them about WLS?
SkinnyScientist I WOULD tell her and speak gently with her. Sure her feelings are very important but what about her HEALTH?? Sometimes it takes that one person to start her on the road to healthy eating and mindfulness. If she is consumes BAGS of garbage in public could you imagine what she is doing in private, and this lends itself to the possibility that she is not aware of gorging on these things.
Tell right away on the next train ride. You seem gentle enough to say it without hurting her feelings or appearing mean or evil but by all means tell her Now! Today! Others may have spared her feelings and sometimes, quite regularly people will pour out their hearts to me...a stranger because I am impartial. Please tell her right away. Understand she will probably be mad at you but I guarantee she will rethink her eating habits and will never pig out on artificial food in public again. And anyway you are the person who is there and none of us here on the Internet can feel the situation as you in that moment.
You will save her do NOT miss the opportunity!!
That has got to be some of the worst advice I have heard on here. Really go talk to the lady about her weight and WLS?
If you ever walked up to me when I was 300+lbs and started talking about WLS to me. I would have punched you so hard in the throat you wouldn't have been able to talk for a long time.
Maybe she's trying to get S*****hed in the throat?

is this sarcasm? The shouty capitals and the phrase "pig out" seem to indicate that it is. If so, why would you be so mean to her or me?
I dont know what to think about your post-because this is what I really feel like inside. I WANT to help, not hurt or hinder. However, the responses above and below seem to indicated that it would hurt her and make her MORE reluctant to seek help or WLS.
That is not my goal.

Put yourself in her shoes. Before surgery, would YOU have appreciated it if a complete stranger came over and told you about the magic cure, even with the best of intentions?
Five bucks says you'd have been angry and upset. And that woman would be the same.

What I usually do is I will mention my surgery. I usually say "Oh wow I must have eaten something too fast my band is not happy right now" and I will stretch. Usually this prompts a question. Then I can talk about "myself" and see how it goes from there.
Usually it works, or I wait till my surgery anniversary and congratulate myself.
