I think that the first thing you need to do is to figure out why you're fat in the first place. What are your eating habits like? Why are they like that? Then, before you start any eating plan/lifestyle change, you need to start working on addressing those answers - preferably with professional help in the form of a therapist (and possibly psychiatrist) with knowledge of this area.
This is the same advice I'd give to anyone who DOES want surgery, since we're all going to need to address our eating baggage eventually if we want to see lifetime success.

People who don't want me to have the surgery often say- well can't you just eat the way that you would after the surgery, and the answer to that is no, I don't think I can. People losing weight after surgery are eating 600-700 calories a day. And in maintenance 1000 -1200 calories a day. I know there are a lot of other factors, but for me, at age 44, I want this to be the last time I ever need to lose weight.

77 lbs lost and counting!
Losing the regain! I got this!
Totally agree. I'd lose some weight with diet and exercise only, but just couldn't sustain it and the weight would come back...and bring friends.
