How to encourage someone else's dieting

He doesn't really go to the doctor unless he needs to. He's a stubborn man and he'll go if he has strep or something or if he hurts himself so no physical recently.

He is relatively active - he walks the dogs daily for at least an hour and on his days off it's usually more. And at his job he is active too as he has to get around the plant and work on machines.

I do try to get him to go to the doctor but that is a neverending ongoing battle.

If he has insurance, it should cover an annual physical 100%. I would insist he go. Does he carry his excess weight around his mid-section, like most men? If so he is at increased danger of a heart attack. I have known way too many people my age and younger dropping dead of heart attacks and strokes recently.

I totally agree with you and he does carry a lot of his weight around his mid-section.

Funny enough though he just text me and asked who our family dr is because sometimes he is a helpless man. I told him and asked why - his insurance is requiring him to get a physical this year. I'm so happy :) No nagging required and I will get peace of mind.

Awesome. Hopefully the doctor will talk to him about taking better care of his health.

Yes :/  My partners are the same way.  They'll go to the doctor when they're ready and damned if anyone else will make them go before that.  RAR.

So, as with food/exercise, I try to set a good example by taking care of myself and getting myself to doctors when I should.  That's really all I can do.  I can't make them take care of themselves :/

My husband and I meal plan together (although not at this moment since I am only 12 days out). Then I would modify for my diet and make any alterations necessary to meet his dieting needs. It allowed both of us to talk about what we were willing to give up or find a healthier option for. I have found my husband to be very receptive to that.

Also, since I had him start cooking with me prior to the surgery, he became more interested in the way the food was being made and has really taken his own approach and accountability towards food. He has lost 25lbs now, since July. Not sure if these things may make dialogue easier about dieting, but it has helped us :)

My husband came to me after he got home from work today, and told me that he would like me to question him about his diet to help keep him in line.  Apparently he's kinda gone off the rails in the last few weeks and needs to get back on track.  He went so far to say that I should check the bank account and if I see a charge of more than $3.50 at a gas station, I should question him about it.  Also, he said to question any fast food charges that he has.  He says that if he knows I'm watching, he'll be better.  We'll see how well it goes over the first time I have to say something, lol.

My husband had rny and has regained about ten pound more than he would like and I know he's upset about it.  I won't tell him what to do but I have made sure there is nothing in our house to snack on whatsoever, as snaking is typically the reason for gaining weight.  Really the only thing you can do that's not preaching is make sure his trigger foods aren't around and focus on really healthy choices.  It's not easy to give up everything but sometimes it's the only way to help.

In my experience, snaking often leads to weight loss.

I had a co-worker ask me to help her stay accountable and stop eating all the carbs - mainly popcorn - but I just can't do it.  I had to re-arrange my insides to get my eating under control and still struggle, so I feel like I am the LAST person to help someone else lose weight or eat better.  If it were my husband though I guess I would just ask him what he wanted from me, just support?  a stern kick in the ass? getting rid of junk in the house?

It can be a very tricky thing.  I remember asking my husband to help me stop eating like crap for years, then I would get my feelings hurt or get defensive when he commented on something I was eating.
