Should I or Shouldn't I?

Hi!  Wondering if anyone could take a few minutes to answer some questions.

I am considering the gastric sleeve surgery and am trying to follow-up with people years out from surgery.

Wondering if it has helped you reach your life goals?  Was it worth it?  Has it been difficult at all?  If so, how?

I am about to be 40 and a mother to two young children.  I want to be around for their weddings, but I am concerned this may just be another failure in my life.  Was hoping to get feedback.

Thanks for your Time!

Read through the existing posts here and you'll see a pretty good variety of stories. People who've done very well and maintained, people who've struggled and gained a lot back, all sorts of problems and complications.

I'm 2.5 years post-op and VSG has definitely helped me reach my life goals.  More importantly, it's propelled me to create new goals that I never would have had prior to surgery.  How amazing is that?  I never dreamed I'd go back to college to work on getting the degrees I'm working on.  It never even crossed my mind that I'd be training to run a half marathon.  To me, the desire to create new and amazing goals has made it all worthwhile.

It is difficult - doing anything that is worthwhile is.  The surgery is only on your stomach, it won't solve any underlying issues - you've got to do that work yourself, and it's hard.  My therapist has been a great boon, I was diagnosed with binge eating disorder and got medication for that which has been awesome.  I felt a huge sense of disconnection with my body about a year out and that was challenging.  Buying new clothes is really freaking expensive.  My friendship with my best friend fizzled (although WLS was only one part of that and I have much better friendships now, so whatever).  Running is harder than not running.

Etc. :)

My cir****tances are exactly the same as yours. I am having my vs surgery on Monday.  I am really nervous but have decided to also see a psychologist.

All WLS give us a tool. It would be up to you to use It correctly. It takes dedication and determination.

You sound like you really want to. Otherwise, you wouldn't be asking here on a board where most of the long term posters are very successful.

Be ready, and do your homework first. Reading here is great. I think I read on here for a few months before ever actually posting a thing. I learned, and continue to learn, SO MUCH.

Good luck!
