Surgery less than a week away

I am new to this group- but my surgery is less than a week away. My question is about the awful taste I have in my mouth that i can't get rid of.  I am doing HMR shakes 3-5 a day and water.  NOTHING ELSE.  Is this permanent or will it go away after surgery?

I think protein shakes are nasty; no matter the brand, but they are a necessary evil for those of us just out of wls. Brush your teeth often. I put lemon in my water as well.

It sounds like you are in ketosis, where your body is burning fat.  Your breath will be stinky and it will taste yucky for a bit, but it does go away.  Just think about it as your body detoxing from all that carb crap you've been putting in it for years.

Try chewing some sugar free gum if you can.  That might help

For about the first week after surgery my breath smelled like a dead rat! I assumed I was in ketosis so I just tried to freshen as much as possible. It went away.

Thanks everyone!  The lemon is a great idea, I will ask if I can do that before surgery tomorrow when I go for a weight check.  And Listerine and a tongue scraper it is.

My surgeon's office recommends Listerine breath strips after surgery, so i assume, before surgery would be beneficial as well.

It sounds like you're in Ketosis, which means you're not feeding enough carbs to the body and it's turning to the fat for energy.  This is a good thing, and is common to leave a strange, even metallic taste in your mouth.  The best remedy is to drink plenty of water to flush the ketones (byproduct of ketosis) from the body quickly.
