I have been struggling with very low iron levels and its been hard raising them, now my doctor said my  vitamin D is very low and that is possibly why I cant raise my Iron and ferritin

any tips experiences that have helped you?

I had gastric bypass in 3/2008

What are the numbers?  How about your Ferritin?  Depending on that you may need iron infusions.  I have to have them since I no longer absorb iron orally.

As far as your D level, try dry D3 50, which is 50,000 iu of D3.  Stay away from D2, which is in gels.  Even non WLS people have trouble absorbing it.  I take one or two D3 50,000 iu a week to keep my numbers up.  Some people have to take them daily in order to raise their level.

At on point my D wasn't even detectable on the lab test.

You can find the dry D3 50,000 at Amazon.  I just bought some last week from there.

If your doctor tries to give you a prescription for 50,000 iu save your money.  It is the D2 and pretty useless for us.

Thank you for the reply

My Ferritin is 4.4 (Standard  11-306)

Iron is 23 (standard 40-150)

Vitamin D is 14 (Standard is 30-100)

Doctor gave me 1,000 one per day, but I decided to purchase Thorne D3 5,000 but I was getting palpitations and stomach cramps, so I stopped them completely, however bone pains are extreme and searching for something that works.

I am having to do my own research since I am not getting my help with my Doctor,

Thank you Again,

If I were you I would run, not walk, to the nearest hematologist and get set up for iron infusions.  Most likely you won't be able to get your iron up without infusions.

I was deficient in Vit D for well over a decade pre-WLS.... I could never get my numbers up until I discovered liquid Vitamin D. I use the Vitamin Shoppe brand. 1 drop= 1,000mg. I have worked my way up...after seeing blood test results along the way...to 20,000mg a day. I know that sounds like a crazy number..... but now my Vit D is right in the mid upper range. It is really a miracle after all these years. I didn't start at 20,000 though...started at like 5,000 and worked up from there...

Thank you for replying I actually didn't think of liquid vit D, I have been searching and never occurred to have it liquid, I have tried multiple brands but for some reason they make me sick, I am not sure what is going on with me,

but I can definitely try liquid and start low and work my way up, I have been religiously working my ferritin and Iron but for some reason they failed to tell me and prescribe me D on time, now is too low and I feel terrible,

Praying I can reverse this and raise my levels

Thank you so much for the suggestion.

I have a band and I had issues with my vitamin D.  My doctor prescribed me some pill at 50,000.  It was so hard for me to take.  I have always gotten an upset stomach from some pills...now it's a bit worse with the band.  Ugh...I hated taking that pill.  But now I know there is a liquid version, I will get that next time!!!

Have you considered patchmd? They are sticky vitamin patches that are absorbed through the skin. I wear a multi and calcium/vit D each night and my levels are perfect. Maybe this could work for you?

Good luck!
