The science of "starvation mode"
Huge high five on posting this. Very good read, I wonder what my prize would be if I email the writer :-)

The cake is a lie, but Starbucks is not.
This made for some perfect timing type reading for me today. I feel like it should be titled " The things your inner fat girl will say to keep you fat" tracking what I actually consume has been eye opening especially after surgery when the assumption is that you can only physically consume small amounts. Small in volume does not mean small in calories!
Thank you so much for posting this!

Ain't it the truth! When I was on shakes after surgery, I even weighed the protein powder. When I used tge scoop that came with the powder, I was going way over. An extra 10 to 20 percent every time you eat REALLY starts to add up.
If we knew what a proper serving size was, we might not be in this situation. Good for you for figuring out a big lesson.

His writing reminds me of James Fell who I like to follow... He also quoted 2 people I respect- Yoni Freehoff, a Canadian Bariatric Doctor- not a surgeon but isn't anti-WLS... And I just heard a lecture from Brian Wansink from Cornell he mentioned when I was at OAC... He was very interesting....
grest article.

I really enjoy Fell's stuff too. One of the very few health bloggers whose stuff I'll actually read!

OK, I am going to play Devils Advocate here, because I had relatives that died of this...Think back to WW2..Concentration Camps... I can't think of anyone who was "Starved into fatness" in fact look up WW2 Concentration Camp Survivors and you will see every bone, every tendon. They truly starved. Right now, I am fighting a really bad disease and can literally maybe only eat clear liquids and maybe 1 cup of clear liquids a day...Believe me, my weight has plummeted and you can count every vertebra and rib bone. So, I am afraid I take that article with a grain of salt. Ask the people in Cambodia and Africa if eating 1 yam a day makes g=them "fat"..I doubt it. Just my humble opinion.
Warmly,
Jackie E.
