Reconstructive Plastic surgery

Hello,  I had Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery in 2007. I weighed 300 pounds I now weigh 165. I feel better look better  (with clothes on) . I have been thinking about getting ReconstructivePlastic surgery. A lower body lift, and a inner thigh lift.  Iam reaching out to ask if anyone has used insurance for these types of surgeries?  I have found a surgeon and have prepared to pay the majority out of pocket.  But I would like to utilize my insurance company BCBS of new mexico if possible.  Thanks in advance for any information.  Respectfully RC

Every insurance plan is different. Your best bet is to call the customer service number on the back of your card and ask them about your specific coverage. Some plans will cover PS with "medical necessity" of varying severity, others have a blanket no-coverage policy.

Thanks for input. I'll keep you guys posted as I progress.  I'm hoping to have reconstructive surgery early or mid 2017. Fingers crossed!

I second Julie's advice to call your insurance first and find out what the deal is.  Then, if you have any issues caused by the extra skin, work with your PCP to document and build a case.  Examples would be a recurring rash caused by a belly fold, rashes or infections caused by the extra thigh skin, etc.

I know one lady that got a brow lift paid for by insurance because the skin was drooping over her eyes, so it has been known to happen.  But, don't be surprised if it ends up all being out of pocket.

Good luck and congratulations on your weight loss!

Eyelid surgery seems to be something more commonly covered now. I have 5 friends who have had it done and all were covered by insurance due to vision issues.

Do they have eyebrow surgery? Mine have been growing so fast lately, I might have to start braiding them.

A coworker had it done on one side due to Bell's palsy and that it was impairing her visual field. She said she did not realize how much it blocked her vision until she had it corrected.

She probably have eye lid surgery and not brow lift.  Completely different procedures.
