Hello Everyone, I'm having revision surgery from lap band to RNY on September 23rd due to horrible reflux. My Dr. is not requiring a pre-op diet except for clear liquids the day before surgery.

I'm wondering what to do with my diet in the meantime before surgery. I'm not compelled to have last supper after last supper but I am not sure what I should do. Because I have the band I am in the habit of chewing food completely and not drinking with or around meals. However, I am eating what ever I'd like that the band can tolerate on any given day. I'm not losing or gaining. I just am wondering what I should be doing now diet wise. Suggestions?

I'd stick with lean proteins and veggies, you can get a jump start on your post op ways of eating... I know your familiar since you've had a band but it'll give you time to get back to the basics... That is if your band allows you to tolerate lean protein and veggies.

Yes that's the biggest issue with the band, many days I can't tolerate lean protein, and veggies have to be so cooked there is no nutritional value to them. But I give my best shot..

I totally understand having been a revision from band also. My only advice is to eat as healthy as you can until your surgery. You'll be so relieved to be free of that band !!

I would concentrate on proteins and cooked veggies.  Load up on proteins. It helps healing after surgery. Stay away from sugars - even the natural in fruits . stay away from starches.

Carbs turn to sugars. Sugars feed bacteria and can slow down the healing post op.

If you need ideas -the proteins can be one you can tolerate-: cottage cheese, boneless chili, stew, fish, carbs, etc. Even protein shakes ....

Did Dr. Pohl specifically tell you that there was no two week pre-op diet?  I'm asking because he is my doctor also and I was a band to bypass revision and there was a two week pre-op required diet.

Yes he specifically told me that based on my BMI I didn't need it.

That's good then.

I would try to stick with healthy meals.  I know first hand how fickle a band can be.  If you can eat salads or some sort of protein that would be good.

Take it a little lighter the day before to keep your intestines 'light' when they start to work with them.  Some docs are more comfortable about that part than others.  My doc required no pre op diet whatsoever, but she asked me to NOT eat any bbq ribs the night before, because it was downright gross.
