Thinking About WLS

Good Morning!

I have been thinking about WLS for a few months, and I have decided to move forward and schedule a consult with the surgeon. I'm 31, and have a BMI of about 42. I have lost a significant amount of weight twice before, but I have never been able to keep it off and I end up gaining it all back. I am contemplating between the sleeve and the lap band. Anyone have any advice for me? ??

Welcome!  I would run far away from the lap band.  Way too many serious complications - scary things like "erosion into esophagus."  Every person I know in real life who has had the lap band has been miserable and either accepts throwing up after every meal or has revised to the RNY or VSG.

Clearly my suggestion is to go for the sleeve.

Advice: don't do lap band. Read the revision board to learn why

I would not recommend the lap band! I did it several years ago, lost a bunch of weight, and gained most of it back. I had a recent revision to RNY,  and couldn't be happier! The lap band leads to lots of vomiting and pain!!! My surgeon says he hardly ever does a lap band anymore. He says it's not very successful for the long term.

I've had a lap band since 2006 and I'm revising to RNY this month. I have horrible reflux and have days where I can at anything and be fine while other days I can get stuck and throw up and can't keep anything down. There's no consistency. Don't have the band. You will regret it.

Thank you for the suggestions! I am going to the bariatric info session next week. I hope it goes well! I told my mom that I was thinking about starting the 6 month program and having surgery in the spring. At first, she was very supportive and then a few days ago she freaked out and thinks I should try therapy instead.  I was hoping to do both, but she is getting really nervous about this procedure. I find it really strange considering she has had the same struggle as I have had her whole life of constantly being up and down in weight. I really just want a tool that will help me keep it off this time. I figure...I am going to struggle with my weight no matter what I do, might as well pick a tool that will help me be successful in the long run.

I think a lot of people remember the weight loss surgeries of years ago, when they were quite risky.  They're just not anymore.  Surgical techniques have improved and they know a lot more about them and how to prevent some of consequences.  It's really become a routine surgery.  It's one of the safer surgeries out there - less risky than a hip replacement.  And they do those every day!
