Newbie - Dumping Syndrome how often do you get this?

Do be careful about choosing a surgery based on your sugar habits. Frankly this was an issue for me too, only because I know like any good addict I'd find a way to get my fix in no matter what surgery I chose, plus I don't do well with negative re-enforcement.

It really is best to stay away from sugar/refined carbs cuz it can lead to more cravings. The calories pile on pretty quickly & b4 you know it you're looking at regain much less a stall. For me whenever I ate a lot of refined carbs/sugar my hunger pangs felt a lot stronger!

The all or nothing method never really worked well for me so usually I have to find alternatives to my sweet tooth. Fake sugars are tricky as they can lead me right to the toilet sometimes. You'll have to find what works for you to get over your sugar habit. Dense protein works well for me & puts my sugar cravings in check.

No one surgery is better than the other, what works for one may not work for another. T-Rebel

So my understanding of dumping is that it can happen to anyone, regardless of WLS or not.  RNY can cause it to happen more often/more reliably.

That said, I have the VSG and, once in a blue moon, I have experienced dumping.  But I experienced it once in a blue moon PRIOR to VSG as well.  So these things are completely unlinked.

I have VSG as well, and have dumped twice. I wanted to die. Sweating, nausea, headache. It is a blessing in  disguise because I'll never eat ice cream again!!

It usually only takes 1 dumping incident to know this is something you never want to experience again.  Mine occurred due to my trust of a "light" salad dressing being safe to eat.  It wasn't!  It was too high in sugar!  OMG, I got so sick!  I now CAREFULLY read labels and have the utmost respect for them.

The odd thing I have found (I'm about a year and a half out from RNY) is that sugar doesn't bother me at all, (I have eaten bites of birthday cakes at work and even M&Ms..I know, bad..) but sugar from carbs oh my god! I had a small bowl of some chinese food with noodles last night. 3-4 bites in, and yes I chewed carefully...the worst pains you could imagine. Won't be doing noodles again, I knew better but wasn't thinking at the time. Luckily it was a meal at home, up and out it came and I just gave the rest of the dish to my daughter and stuck to warm fluids the rest of the night. You learn what you can tolerate and what you can't, (sometimes I need to be told more than once LOL) and you work with what you are given.

Hi!  I am new also and had my sleeve surgery 8/1/16.  I have had dumping syndrome twice.  Oddly enough, both times were from drinking a protein shake (1g sugar) too quickly.  I drank it like I would have pre-surgery just because I was rushing and not paying attention.  About 1 hour later things were bad.

I may be more sensitive than most for this because I had have had this issue pop up (or poop out lol) from time to time since gallbladder surgery 10 years ago.  Those episodes were always related to a very high fat meal, like sausage.

I haven't had anything close to high sugar since my surgery but I'll watch for that too as my diet becomes less limited.

I'm sorry you had this experience, but it isn't dumping. Dumping is a colloquial term for a very specific medical issue. You may be lactose intolerant, have a food allergy, or many other things, but not dumping.

I'm only 17 months out. But I haven't had dumping yet. I'm also very strict about what I eat. I have had very little sugar. I do eat sugar free candies, and low sugar sweets from time to time and I've never had a problem with any of those. Early on I had some issues with foamies but it was pretty typical with adjusting how much I was eating and drinking too soon after, etc.

Dumping honestly doesn't bother me too much - if I do I figure I will want to stay far away from those things. So either way I'm good if I do or don't.

Great thank you that is great information.  Do you ever feel like you really get hungry and want to just keep eating?  or is that just at the start?
