One year post-op progress report!

Hi everyone!

I haven't posted here in a long time. I have turned into a bit of a lurker in the past 6 months. But July 30th was my one year surgiversary from my VSG, so I feel like its a good time to brush off the old keyboard.

Here are the stats:

High weight: 366

Surgery weight: 328

Weight at 1-year weigh in: 234

In total I've lost about 132 lbs, and my BMI has gone from a 51 to a 32!

I can't even begin to describe all the ways my life has changed since VSG. I've literally lost a normal sized person amount of weight. I feel incredible. I have discovered a new love for exercise that I didn't think I had inside me. I count down the hours until I get to go to my kickboxing and mma classes at night. Its seriously the strangest thing. I feel like a completely different person.

I have been facing some setbacks over the past few months... around month 8 my weight loss started slowing down and I got very frustrated and fell off my wagon a bit... stopped measuring and tracking my food, and ended up with a 5 lb regain that really woke me up. And now that I'm getting closer to a normal BMI, even when my eating is on plan and I'm exercising consistently and challenging myself, the weight loss is so much slower. I've had to become okay with that. I put away my scale and started focusing on my fitness goals, my life goals, career goals, etc. instead of the number on the scale. Now I feel more motivated than ever and I don't feel like that number is the only barometer of my success!

I refuse to set myself an ultimate weight goal. I am now very focused on building muscle, pushing myself in what I can do physically, and making myself healthier inside and out. My ultimate goal is to keep making myself better without ever feeling like I'm not good enough today.

Here is a brief photo journey of my progress thus far! Thank you all for reading!

Wonderful progress...

Word of caution - don't count too much on exercises for weight loss. In some cases the exercise can be counterproductive for weight loss. Plus if for whatever reason you need to stop exercises- that may affect you negatively on the scale...

Oh don't I know it. If there's one thing I've learned about exercise is that you can't earn your food at the gym, and that real weight loss comes in the kitchen. But I am definitely focused less on the weight loss number than I am on my fitness goals now, which in the long run are more important to me than the number on the scale. But I definitely have to keep the balance and keep my food on track in order to meet those goals, as well.
