Replacements for anxiety/stress eating
I get busy when I feel it coming on. I work in the yard, take the dog for a walk, go to the gym or go for a run. I just try to get as busy as I can so it passes. I find it can get tricky if I am not at home as I get ants in my pants at times....LOL
Write everything down! Write what is going on and when. What are you feeling when you want to eat. This will give you a road map to your triggers. Once you have your road map, get ready to make your battle plan. If you find there are certain foods that you want the most, don't have them in the house. I can't tell you how many times I go to the kitchen wanting chocolate and come out with a protein shake. If you find certain people or situations make you want to eat, do what you can to change it.
Finally, keep your mind and hands busy! Good Luck!

I'm a believer in giving yourself a little something satisfying so your mind can forget it and move along. Just make sure it's healthy or at least not something containing fats and sugars. I've got the same issue. I'll do a spoon of peanut butter or a sugar free popsicle. Sometimes 5-6 tortilla chips or a small low fat sugar free yogurt. Drinking more water will help also. I know it's a little different for everyone.
Good Luck finding your answer!
Rich: there is nothing wrong with eating food with fat.. BTW: PB has fat - lots of it... so eating 1 tsp or 1 Tbs of PB provides fat.
and there is no SF yogurt (unless you eat coconut unsweetened yogurt) . all yogurt has sugar - they may be NSA - "no sugar added"- but all of them have sugar.

They sure do. I was trying to keep it as generic and simple as possible for a quick answer. No sugar added doesn't mean sugar free but helps a bit I guess. pb definitely has fat. Some fats are better or worse than others as I'm sure you know. I usually eat the reg as opposed to reduced fat as they usually have more sugar. I assume to add to the flavor of reducing the fats. I've been eating the natural peanut butter. I have had almond butter as well but don't like it as much. A small jar will usually last 3-4 month so I guess I was getting at the "Give yourself a small taste" to satisfy your craving and get it off your mind. If your kind of anxious and need something in your hand I usually make it a bottle of water (plain of flavored). This helps ensure your mindless grazing does as little damaged as possible. I had my wls surgery back in 05'. Like you and most of us here were pretty all nutritional experts after a while. It's just a matter of actually putting this knowledge to work along with the tool the surgeon gave us.

I was just trying to see where you were going with " avoid fat and sugar": but have some PB or sugar free yogurt... - that was bit confusing to me - as if you don't know what you are talking about...
I don't call myself an expert -i just try to live by example - and I learned the hard way that avoiding fat and eating low fat food and not real food - what caused some of my regain. Regain that I lost eating real food.. even spoonfuls of real full fat - natural - organic NSA PB.. I avoid fat free or low fat foods...
and that for me - works much better than "frankenfood." but.. I am not an expert and that approach may not work for everyone.
suggesting someone get "a small fix" when they are stress may lead them to where they were before - stress eating... it just may start with one tsp. eating because one is stressed and not hungry - is not a good idea.. even so called "good for us foods"
Stress eating is never good idea...

I've done the regain (we all bounce a little bit early on as the body adjusts). At least I've heard this from most everyone. I'm more into the the real food with smart choices and in moderation. Your going to overdo something at some point. I find that keeping track of what and how much I've eaten and trying to balance it out to complete a good day works best especially out in the real world. I travel a lot for work so this make it double hard I find but there's always good choices if we look hard enough. We steer clear of the frankenfoods as well. I'm still standing by the "small fix" for me anyway. It's all part of the moderation and making this a life long program. If these little things leads to more cheats then the uncontrolled feeding frenzy the the person hasn't properly dealt with what probably lead them into the surgeons office in the first place. I recently told someone who is starting their journey that they would need a quick psych evaluation to get approved and it was pretty much to make sure they knew what they were getting into and the life long effect. Know this person I also suggested that they try a few sessions to confront some other issues which may have help them into the problem of excessive overeating in the first place. The last thing you want to do is to not face and deal and end up eating around your procedure over time or transferring that food addiction to another area. Anorexia, sex addiction, alcoholism, shopping, ect. Definitely not an expert here. Just lived a lot of life and am very observant to others. Your right that stress eating is never a good thing. We can''t avoid stress for the most part. We can alter how we deal with it for sure.

I make a really low fat pb substitute using the freeze dried peanut butter powder and regular organic pb where some of the oil separates and can be drained off . I mix it in a food processor with a lot of water and it fluffs up very nicely and keeps for a long time in the fridge .
I would estimate the fat per tablespoon serving to be around 4-5 grams possibly even three as opposed to sixteen for regular pb. The healthy veggie protein levels are also through the roof.
