Newbie here - scared of denial
Hi all,
I'm a 28 y/o F, 4' 10.5" (though my drivers' license tells you 4' 11") and I weigh 195lbs. My appointment is at the end of August with the MD, nutritionist, and psych. After much consideration, I think I want to be upfront with the team at the weight center and just flat-out say I want WLS. I workout 3x/week, I eat well (mostly), and for years the pounds just keep coming on. I've been able to lose weight in the past, but it always creeps back up. It's hard for me to admit I need help. I've done all the research, and the only thing I can think of that will disqualify me is the BMI of 40. I have no comorbidities, so I need to weigh 198 at minimum to qualify. I'm so afraid that a measly 2-3lbs will prevent me from getting this life-saving procedure. I've been told my insurance (BCBS-MA) is pretty good to work with, so I have that going for me.
Maybe I sound petty because I know many others need to lose more than me. But according to the BMI scale, I should weigh around 100lbs because of my height!
Anyone with similar experiences? Advise? I'm a nervous wreck over here!
All you can do is try. Talk with them, let them know your interest and depending on wherever you are, you either get a referral to a surgeon or find one yourself. I'm not sure what you mean about a weight center is all
Then you can talk with the insurance coordinator and they will have the experience and information to be able to research for you and determine if you would be covered or not.
If not, there is always self pay. Or you could just chug a bunch of water before your weigh in

I was in a similar boat, and knew it before going into the doctor's office. No co morbidities, and a BMI, at the time of 38-39.
I just happened to gain a few pounds before my first appointment...
Drink a bunch of water... wear heavier clothes... have a pizza...
I know this approach might get me in trouble here with some of the other posters here, but I'm just being honest.
You are 28. If they deny you now over a couple of pounds, it'll be quite a while before you are able to reapply.
It's a game the insurance companies play. Just because they are nice to work with doesn't mean they'll want to shell out 50K to have your surgery.

I've heard of people who load their pockets with rocks before hopping on the scale. If everything else in your health history suggests you're a good candidate and the doctor agrees? I don't know that there's so much of a problem with a pair of combat boots.

Higher weight increases BMI. So does lower height. Slouch a little.

Highest weight was 475. RNY on 08/21/12. Current weight: 198.

Even though I was a self pay - I was worried that below 40bmi the doc would not do my surgery. So app 2-3 weeks before my appointment I just stopped dieting like a crazy person and just ate like "a normal person.". in no time I gained 10 lbs. not that I really wanted to - but I was keeping my weight stable and lower because of the diet and exercises.. so stopping that just for 2 weeks was enough to reach 41 BM and convince me that I really need WLS.

I know someone *****cently got a bigger bra. put two ankle weights in per cup and got her extra weight for her exam. She said she excused herself to use the bathroom real quick before the physical exam and put them in her purse.
She had put a few of the required pounds on but just couldn't eat her way quick enough to what she needed.
Just a thought!
