Heidi,
My first reaction is to agree with you, forcing a child into being obese is a form of child abuse that society isn't readily accepting right now. Now for my other reactions.
Don't always assume it's what you first think is the truth. The little girl might have been on medications which have made her look like she's very overweight such as treatment for cancer or other illness. Also the woman she was with might not be the one who's "done this to her". Donuts at 11pm for you or the child isn't a good choice. However you and her were there for the same reasons, a late night treat. Maybe this girl was 300lbs last year and as part of a normal part of life they stopped off just like you did for a treat. Hell maybe the donuts weren't even for her but were for the homeless shelter down the street. My point is you observed a small part of these two people's lives and have added a book's worth of story to their situation that you really know nothing about.
Finally I think you've projected a lot of your own issues onto these people, similar to what you did to your own boy. You have food issues, you've had food issues, and you have very strong thoughts about obesity. Perhaps those song feelings could be channeled into a healthy positive energy that leads you seeking help dealing with your feelings about obesity and then helping others to understand theirs.
