I was wondering when did you make your last day your last of Work.....my doctor is filling out my FMLA papers but I was wondering when I could actually let them know my last day....my surgery is August 3 so I was thinking maybe July 25....that way I could prepare myself even more and do some more outings with the children....would it be too early to leave work

The day before is fine with me.  Prep is pretty simple.  I prefer taking time off to recover after the surgery than before.

I worked until the day before my surgery, and took off six working days. I had surgery on a Friday, and went back to work on a Monday so that I had the the two weekends included in my time off. It worked well for me!

I took off the day before due to the bowel prep - needed to be very close to a bathroom.  Other than that there's really no reason to take off time before surgery.  If you have the time off to spend with the kiddos in the summer go for it, but if you have a limited amount of time off available I'd much rather have the time off afterwards to recuperate.  I was off for 4 weeks after, probably could have gone back after 3, but was still very tired and adjusting to the new eating plan.  I guess it also depends on what your doc will sign off for you and what your workplace will allow.

I worked up until the day before.  You will prefer more time off after surgery.  I was hoping to go back in two weeks and have been out longer than I expected.

My surgery was on a Monday, and I worked until the Friday prior. I was very grateful to take every bit of the two months for recovery that I had arranged.  You've got weekends for outings with the children.  If anything, teach them how to do some of the chores you shouldn't be doing for several weeks, yourself.

I would not take off over a week before surgery. If you are on a liquid diet it might give you too much time to obsess over not being able to eat. If you want time with your kids, maybe take a couple days off, but save your days for after surgery. Most people are fine going back to work after 2 weeks, but some need more time.
