1 week out with questions

Hi April -

I'm 3 weeks out and the first week my stomach was like a basketball from all the anesthesia. I lost a little the first week but more the second. From what I've read here, it's different for everyone, and it just may take you longer for your body to adjust from the surgery. I wouldn't worry about it, and I'm sure your not doing anything wrong as long as you're following your doctor's instructions.

As for the pain meds, my surgeon told me "don't be a hero". If you're in pain and need them, take them....it's only temporary. I had a hysterectomy a few years ago and I can tell you that the recovery was much harder than this, in that it took me longer to be able to get up off the sofa on my own, etc. That area has more muscle than the stomach area.

Congratulations and welcome to the losers bench!

Lisa

For that type of hernia, women wear a hernia brief.  It looks like a girdle but the hernia support is in the groin area. You definitely should be wearing one until they can do a repair.  It will keep the hernia in place and alleviate the pain.

Your insurance will probably cover it at a medical supply store if the doctor orders it.

Congrats- the first week was the worst for me.  I do not know anything about the hernia you have, wish I could be more help.

Your body is going through alot of changes - if you are a numbers person, like me, getting on the scale daily will only drive you crazy this soon after surgery.  I did not weigh at home (I did not even have a scale until 3 months post) and only weighed at the drs office.  I was always happy!!!!  And I focused on staying 100% compliant with my doctors orders - because that is the best I could do.  (I weigh more often now, at 18 months post).  That way I was not even concerned that I was stalling at 1 week - a stall is like 3-4 weeks at the same weight, not 3-4 days. (It also got me off of what I call the TYRANNY of the scale)

I only(??) lost 15 pounds that first month (compared to my friend who lost 30, ontop of 50 pounds she lost pre-op).  I lost at the same rate 12-15 pounds the whole time - it does add up.

Good luck with your journey.  I think you are on the right track when you say that everyone's journey is different.

Sharon

Thanks Sharon! I'm not really worried I know it'll come off eventually because I'm trying my best to follow plan. I struggle with protein in any form except like, MOIST chicken, if its not that moist I have to add some type of dipping sauce and that REALLY helps me get the consistency I need to swallow. (I avoid sugary ones!) Well I admit I haven't tried eggs yet, I'm scared to. People have problems with them.  I'm cleared for them now but man, I don't want to get sick if they don't sit well.

ANYWAY sorry off on a rabbit trail lol. I do weigh daily bit it really doesn't bother me when the numbers don't drop because I know I'm still early and they will drop in time :) I was just worried that if my surgeon didn't see a drop bigger than the one I have he would think I was cheating or something! Which I'm NOT! lol

Hey April. You will be fine. This happens. Just do not forget this. You had a RNY! That means you WILL lose weight in the first 6 months. Just follow the plan, and any stalls will take care of themselves.

You are in your honeymoon. Good for you April! Enjoy every minute of the great ride you're on now. It will be a time you reflect on for many years to come. I'm glad for you.

Let your body heal now. That is very important going forward. It will take your insides twice as long as the outside.

GREAT JOB APRIL!!
