Vitamins and long term Rny.
I have been hearing that problems are starting to show up with the malabsorption of vitamins around the ten year mark. I am almost seven years out and have had no problems. I do take my vitamins and get blood work done every year and so far all has been good. HAve there been recent studies on this? I was also been told that once you stop absorbing it is difficult to get back even with infusions. I have also heard that some doctors are not doing RNY bypass and only do the sleeve because of this problem. I would like to know if this is true concern or hype.

I haven't heard a thing about doctors stopping RNY; it's still considered the "gold standard." Many doctors won't do BANDS anymore, but bypass is still on.

That's what I thought but just heard from another rny patient who is 11 years out and all of a sudden malabsorption issues and her family physician was telling her that.. I said I had not hear that at all but it got me thinking and would love to hear from others who are far out and still not having any issues. Just doing what they are supposed to do with taking their vitamins etc and all is still good....thanks for responding.
Vitamin and mineral deficiencies do become more common further out from surgery. But they do so because many people stop taking their supplements, or they take crappy vitamins like Flintstones or gummies. Other WLSers have their surgeon retire, or they move away, and stop having COMPLETE labwork done. Or they lose their insurance, and stop having them checked.
Take good quality vitamins. Have complete labs done, once a year. Complete labs require 14 or 15 vials of blood. Anything less, and they are skipping things that might be critical.
Iron infusions work just fine. Some never need them. Some need them more often than others. Only labwork will tell for sure.
Surgeons have not stopped doing RNY. Some prefer doing VSG now, because it's a shorter surgery, they can do more of them, and make more money.

Thanks for replying. I agree with you. It is amazing the difference of opinions that physicians have. The problem I see is general physicians are not that up to date or not taught enough about weight loss surgery. I have found that I have to keep a close eye when I get my orders for my blood work. I also have had to tell my doctors what I need checked. Some thing the standard blood work is okay and we know that is not correct....
WoAh. My doc has me on flintsones ....they are crap?

For post-op WLS they're not good. They're not a complete vitamin for us. You're much better off taking Centrum or Centrum Silver or their generic counterparts. I'd stick with the name brand, though, if you want chewables ( just my experience. )
