Hip/Thigh Pain
OH doctors: a liitle help please:
i'm a 47 yr old man. I had successful RNY 8 minths ago. Lost 140 lbs (321 to 177) quickly and without incident. For a few days, my hip has felt painful....shooting pain. Today I played street hockey....hard running for an hour. It now feels VERY PAINFUL, THROBBING AND VERY painful from the thigh up my side. Cant really walk. It feels like imy leg would snap and crumble if I jumped off two steps.
thoughts? Old age? Cause for concern?

I don't believe there are any doctors *****ad the boards and comment directly to individual posters.
If you've got any unexplained pain, especially if it's BAD, get yourself to a doctor to have it looked at ASAP. Urgent care might be a good choice, since they can say "oh yeah, it's probably just a cramp, stretch and eat a banana" OR "wow, this is serious, talk to a specialist first thing Monday morning."

Not a doctor here.
I think you should go see someone ASAP. ( Urgent care or an ER if you're in severe pain. ) That's where I'd be going if I was experiencing that level of pain. I freely admit I'm a total weenie where pain is concerned. Hangnails make me tear up.
For me, as my weight decreased, my gait changed and my right knee ( which is arthritic ) hurt periodically until my gait was completely different, but the pain wasn't anywhere near your level. That could be part of what you're going through, but then again it may not even be WLS related. It could be a sports injury. It could be aging. It could be almost anything.
Congrats on the awesome job losing by the way!
Hope you can find out what's going on with your hip.

i would find a good chiropractor. It might be sciatica, a pinched nerve.
I agree with everyone else..ALWAYS see your doctor or medical professional. That being said, many of us have carried extra weight around for years... Once you GET osteoarthritis, it never goes away, and some ailments do indeed come out more painfully prominent when we get older, and yes, even thinner!
Get a dexa scan or X-Ray for your hip/bones. Because you have had RNY you cannot do NSAID(Aleve, Ibuprofin, etc) but you can take a little Tylenol. There are some GREAT products out there meanwhile. Always remember R.I.C.E....."Rest; ICE (cold treatment) Compression (or support) and Elevation...(REST that leg for now!)
Honest truth? Some of us age better than others. Most 73 year olds can run circles around me! *smile*. BUT, we have to accept the aches, pain, and arthritis sometimes as we get older. Again, check with your Doc to make sure you don't have a hip fracture or serious injury.
Message Therapy and Chiropractic manipulation can be a HUGE help in relieving pain. Also I had to accept that at 53 I cannot do anymore what I could at 23.
Warmly,
