DEXA SCAN on MONDAY!

And how is the procedure done?   Do you lay on a table and it's like getting an x-ray of part of your body or a CT-scan done?  Or is it more like they stick a probe next to part of your body like when doing a sonogram?

I also did the RMR test, which was a real eye opener as mine is 20 per cent higher than average for my age!!!!

I have had a series of dexascans in the last few years both to find out my body composition and to keep an eye on my bone density (which is also awesome for my age)

I hope you find the test interesting and inspirational.  For me, it was definitely money well spent

So does insurance typically pay for this, or is it out of pocket? Anyone care to share approximate costs if its not covered? I feel like I'm throwing a dart at a dartboard to guess my goal weight! LOL

Pammieanne, I feel your frustration!  This is why I am having the DEXA. My body is really holding on to these last few pounds.  I am going with BodySpec @ $45 for one scan.  This will help me plan my "what's next" goals.

I had a dexascan done last October, if you check my OH blog I wrote about the experience. It did make me set my goal to a higher weight. Funny thing is I am now at the lower goal I originally set... But I realize this is the low end of normal for me, not the high end if normal that the BMI charts say.  Well worth the money.

I read your blog and thank you for sharing! Your results are the reason I am motivated to find out if my original goal is realistic. I am struggling with these last few pounds.

My major issue is eating after 5 pm. I do great at home and work--take in at least 100g of protein and 100 oz of fluid daily. However, my eating after 5 pm is atrocious.

Now, I don't each junk--no sweets, high carbs. I just eat too much food. Calories are always 1600-1700 daily and some days I hit 200g protein. I had to up my PPI to 4X daily. Crazy thing is I am not hungry!

I thought those scans just show your bone density i.e. whether you have signs of Osteoporosis  (?)

Some of the machines just do bone density but others determine body composition, too.

DEXA scans are used to measure fat and muscle composition also.

Interesting.  I wonder how accurate the DEXA is in that regard vs. the new weight scales that use electric impedance to determine body fat, muscle, bone and water density (%s).
