Hello OH family.

I have been having some real struggles lately. The Memorial holiday hits me hard every year. My family has lost several members fighting in wars on foreign soil. My Father was taken in Vietnam, and I have never really gotten over it I guess.

I always want to drink it away like I used to in my 30's. I always want to eat it away like in my 40's. I choose now to do neither. I'm sorry if I was acting weird, or why I changed back to my tribal name for a few days leading up to the "holiday".

I just wanted to reconnect with this very important facet of my recovery and lifestyle change. All of the people here are valuable to me, and I hope I tell you that.

I got through the weekend with family support, a midnight call from my Mom. She's slipping now and her time when she remembers my name vary. So, midnight calls happen sometimes. It was nice to get completely through a tough month and not ever cheat on my eating plan.

There was several ceremonies I attended that brought so much of the pain that families are currently feeling over recently having lost loved ones, that is the toughest thing to hear. To learn that a 23 year old gets killed by a child with a bomb strapped to him is terrible to hear.

I feel so much pain for them it's hard to put into words.

And YES! On to the brighter things in life indeed.

My son in law is a pilot in the Air Force. I worry a lot for them, although so far he's been kept safe (he flies those huge cargo planes). I have other friends who have not been so lucky and have lost their children or family members. It's truly a life changing event... And yes, these bombers that are children is just heart breaking...

We are lucky to have such dedicated young people in our country to help defend us!

Gary,

I'm so sorry for your losses.  May is not a very good month for me either, so I know exactly where you're coming from.

Congratulations on not slipping back on your eating plan even when the going gets tough -- it's harder than it looks.  I quit smoking in 1986 and still find when I'm stressed or upset I think (for a split second) "I'll just have a cigarette".  Thirty years, for crying out loud!!!

Keep the faith -- we're all here walking along beside you, so don't worry if you have to lean a bit.

Gary - Glad you're back, I was getting worried.  It sounds as though you are helping your family get through these tough times.  We know that the entire family is involved when someone volunteers to be a member of one of the services.
