I have the best Mom.

In 1977, I was turning 11 and my Mother had a problem. She had no money to buy me anything. My Father passed in 1970, leaving her with 5 mouths to feed so money was always tight. For my Mom, this was no problem, for she had a secret.

On the Morning of Oct 5, she gets me up at like 5 am and gets me in the car. We drove out of Ajbuquerque going east. "WTF" my 11 yo old thought to itself, are we going? We drove for what felt like 4 hours, it was 90 minutes. We were driving to the top of Sandia crest, it overlooks the city from a mile above it.

As we parked the car at the summit, we could see a small group of people already gathered at the top looking at something. "There is a PARTY for me"! I remember thinking. I was so excited as we got to where they were standing. I could see about 600 hot air balloons in the sky above my city.

"Happy Birthday Mijo" My Mother whispered into my ear so no one else could hear. "Those are for you." And to this day, I STILL think of every one of those balloons as mine.

We drove home, my Mom cried quietly all the way.I knew why but never said anything. For me, BEST BIRTHDAY EVER!

This brought me back to the year my husband committed suicide. He died on July 6th, my daughter's 4th birthday would be July 25th.  I had to do SOMETHING...even though I was still in a fog of shock, sadness, anger, worry...my company had given me the summer off.  I took her (and my 7-y-o son) to Canobie Lake Park in New Hampshire for the day with my sister.  We rode the rides, played games, had a perfect day.  While we were out, my parents went and got her a cake, streamers, decorations so that when we came home she was surprised by her little "party." She opened her gifts, telling everyone about the day we had...so innocent.  When I tucked her in that night she said in her little voice, "Mumma, that was my best birthday I ever had."

I knew we would all be okay.

Mothers can be such pillars of strength, and you are definitely one of them.  I can't even imagine how difficult that time must have been for you.

Thank you for sharing your story. You are an amazing mother. I don't think I would have been able to hold myself together.
