Pre Surgery Dumping?

So I have been thinking about this and wanted to get it out there and get other's thoughts.

A few years ago I did the ultimate weight loss diet, in which I went from 227 to 179. It was Atkins, old style. I loved it and did very well. I have a very distinct memory though... I had been on the diet for a few months, and was probably close to my lowest when my birthday came... I met a friend of mine for lunch at Pappasitos - Mexican restaurant. I had almost an entire basket of chips and a whole margarita before my friend got there. I had lunch, more chips and another margarita.

About 15 minutes after we ate, I ended up in the bathroom... I had hot flashes, stomach cramps, and basically laid my face on the concrete floor of the bathroom... I found, over several years, that every time I had a margarita I would get 'sick' like that.

Of course, as I went further from my low carb super star diet, the less effect margaritas had on me (and I mostly quit drinking them).

I'm wondering if what I had all those years ago was 'dumping', pre surgery... and if so, I'm betting that I'm going to be one that dumps should I try large amounts of carbs, or sugary margaritas LOL.

Any experiences or thoughts on this one?

BTW, my surgery went well, and aside from being sore on the left side, I'm doing well. As soon as I can stand up right without feeling like an old lady, I'll be doing superb! LOL I am tolerating my protein shakes and water well, although I haven't quite hit that total 64 ounces in a day - yesterday I hit 50. I'm getting there!

some "=normies" dump also...

it could have been that... or you were allergic to margaritas...

either way - "kids,... don't try that at home"... comes to mind...

Yes, well I did test out several different concoctions and I really think it was just the combination of all that sugar in the sweet and sour and the tequila. I did confirm that the tequila was not to blame

I think what I'm realizing is that I am simply not cut out for a bunch of processed sugars and carbs. That with my new tool, I should be in my glory in a few months. I am already tiring of the flavored waters, and want beef broth instead... LOL My carb monster was cut off during my pre-op diet, so I think I'm past the withdrawls of that... I'm really so happy with my choice. The first day I went in and met my NUT I realized that having this surgery really just gave me the green flag to go low carb for now on! And I'm so happy I was able to have the surgery. Now I just cant wait to continue on this path and be truly successful in the long term :)

A 'Normie' huh?? Wow, I'm almost positive I've never been considered a 'normie' before!

First time i even dumped was because I used Bailey on my protein ice cream...The alcohol and sugar combination can be really "interesting".....

I had this same reaction "pre-surgery" with a McDonald's milkshake.  The combination of liquid and too much sugar hit me as soon as I got home.  Thank goodness I made it home.

So I wonder if we'll be likely to dump post surgery...

I'm thinking this will be a very good reason to NOT push the boundaries once I can eat again...

Part of me really hopes that's what it means. I think I'd like to have a negative reinforcement for down the road

The easiest thing is to assume you dump. That got me through the first 6 months. Then dummy me decided to try a small amount ( 3 bites ) of apple pie apple at Thanksgiving. Oh, I was miserable. It wasn't a full on dump, but it was close enough.

Hope your surgery went well!! I was actuslly waiting to see you post something.

Edited to add: Duh..I missed the last part of your post stating surgery went well. It's been a loooong day.

I woke up in between a memory and a dream...

I dumped pre surgery as well after a months long stint of no sugar (very restricted diet) then a binge on cake. It was horrible and 100% the dumping that post ops experience.

That experience kept me on the path since surgery, I don't want to have that happen again!

I am so glad I read your post.  I am finishing my first week of pre-op diet.  I was wondering if  it was normal to "nearly not make it the bathroom" with others.  I have been been eating a lot of cottage cheese, protein shakes, yogurt and jello.  The two things I'm missing most is my weekly chips & margaritas with friends and coffee.  I'm not  dizzy or having hot flashes, just going to the bathroom a lot.

I can tell I am starting to get really nervous now that my surgery is only a week away.  I've been having terrible dreams.  I am having my surgery in Mexico w/ Dr Q.  I think I'm doing the right thing, but what if something goes wrong?  I think about my kids if something was to happen.  Any advice?
