One month post op struggles

It violates the protein rules, but I really needed to start gently with food. All protein sat like a lead ball in my belly. So... I focused on liquids and did the old stomach-bug foods(applesauce, mashed potatoes, etc), bland stuff to just get my innards used to having food in there again, and then started adding a little protein. Instead if gravy, cottage cheese to keep the mashed potatoes moist. And no more than one total ounce per meal... Tho I usually couldn't get all of it in. Making changes every few days.

About 10 days in, got to three tiny bites of ground round with marinara sauce, then the next day almost half an ounce of chicken breast with more marinara... Then same day two wee meals of cannellini beans, cheese, and red wine vinaigrette. Protein pudding (runny from soy milk so it doesn't whip up and take too much room) for breakfast... And if I'd had it again rather than the delicious bean stuff... I'd have hit 60g protein. Instead, 51g, but it's still the highest so far.

(And name your tummy. Because when mine's being a brat, it makes me feel better cussing him by name. For instance: DAMMIT, RUPERT, IT'S JUST A FRIGGAN PROTEIN SHAKE! SETTLE DOWN! Doesn't really help digestion, but big thumbs up for stress relief.)

What Darcy G did was pretty much what I was told to do by by surgeon.   First 'meal' was mashed potatoes- very wet.    Finally, poached flounder.  (It was totally bland, but it was the best fricking poached flounder I ever had after 10 days of prot shakes). It was prob another wee****il I progressed to cottage cheese, nuked with a spoon of spag sauce, then later chicken.  I had stayed on 2 weeks of 2 prot shakes a day, but I should have gone to 1 prot shake a 2 real meals a few days sooner.

That's good to know! I actually couldn't get any advice about this from my team... they just kept banging the protein drum--and I know that it's important, but there was just no getting protein in by lengthening the time that I couldn't get the protein in by trying to force it and getting sick over and over!

Very sorry your having such discomfort. Hopefully it will subside and you can get back to the good feelings about the surgery and where it will lead you.

I have heard great things about Protonix and it's ability to control nausea and acid reflux in most people. I know everyone's saying it but it is important to get tha****er and protein (in any form that sits well for you) as this is what will keep you healing, gaining strength back and staying on the road to losing the weight.

I never tried pureed foods. They just sounds nasty so I used the supp shakes (EAS used to make a tasty one very high in protein) protein powder in whatever sounded good and would sit well, etc. Your tastes will change as you go along and you can fine tune from there. I found mine totally changed after surgery and to this day are completely different. This is actually good as those eating habits got me into trouble in the first place.

At this stage just follow exactly what the Dr says, eat as you can and drink, drink, drink.

Keep up the great work and congratulations in advance for getting past this stage. Rich

I'm really sorry that it has sucked so bad thus far. My first month was terrible also. My nurse told me something on my 3 day hospital stay, on my 30th day after RNY. She said to give myself 90 days of strict adherence to my doc's orders, then re-asses how I felt. (I hated my choice for the first 2 months) Then things slowly got better, my body needed some time as this was a huge change that it was only starting to get used to at the 30 day mark.

I feel much better physically now. Please be aware of the potential to dump hormones at some early point. I was very low at that time. The people here helped me out of it. Sometimes you will find yourself confused as all h... about some of this stuff. Come here, and these people will help as much as possible.

Hope you feel better. Good Luck

I didn't have any acid issues but I felt nauseous for the first 3 weeks after surgery.....I mean every time I put something even near my mouth I felt nauseous.  At about the 4th week it suddenly got better for me.  It takes time to adjust to everything and like Gary said, your hormones are wacky now too, so that doesn't help.  I hope you start to feel better soon!
