Got HERNIA from a Fall 12 years after surgery

Hi,

I've called all over and NO ONE will give me a simple answer so I am asking healthy people with a bit of time to help me find some information.

I was in a car accident in 2012 and could no longer walk daily so I gained about 50 lbs back after my gastric bypass.  I did very well until that happened. 

Then in March of this year I fell in a large pothole in the road (there are no sidewalks in this community) and the next day I woke up to a hernia.  YES....it's been confirmed via a CT scan. 

The owners of this community are slumlords and do NOT care about anyone or the condition of this place.  One street had over 9 huge,  deep potholes and yesterday the residents told me they've been there 3+ years now.

I NEED SOMEONE TO HELP ME GATHER INFO,  PLEASE!!  I have had 19 operations since age 2 and don't have the health to do this or else I'd not be here.  Can someone please look up the direct correlation between FALLS & BARIATRIC SURGERY to find out IF IT'S POSSIBLE TO GET A HERNIA.  I KNOW I got a hernia since it happened.  But,  now it's time to prove it.  Lawyers in this state don't like to search for info.  I spent over 1000 hours going to PT,  doctors galore,  looking up info, etc. after the car accident and my lawyer lost the case :(   I NEED HERNIA SURGERY to keep from dying and can't have it here.  This community and home are too dangerous.  I can't type out more info,  just please believe me, if I have surgery now it'll KILL me.  When I explained the situation to the surgeon his staff said "oh,  he would never operate on you in that situation even if you did want surgery now".  Thus,  it's very pertinent and an emergency that someone please help me.

I basically need to know:  Fall + gastric bypass (RNY) = hernia.  So far I have one item from online from 1994 where this occurred.  I just don't know how many times it has been documented.  I know after bariatric surgery the stomach is compromised and the muscles and all are weakened.  Thus, a hard fall forward can absolutely cause a hernia.  I just need PROOF via written accounts to print out to show the attorney.

Thank you for any positive information anyone can help gather for me.  I'm too sick,  in pain,  and scared to look anything else up.

I think you are leaping to a lot of false conclusions.

RNY, or any WLS, does not cause hernias. Being morbidly obese causes hernias, because our muscles were stretched and distorted so badly from being huge. Losing a lot of weight and becoming more active simply reveals the problem.

If you got a hernia from a fall, you can blame the hernia on your obesity, not the surgery that enabled you to lose weight and get healthier.

Are the "owners of your community, the slumlords," responsible for maintaining roads, and filling potholes? In every town or city I've seen, it's the municipality that has that obligation.

I'm sorry, but not going on daily walks did not cause you to gain 50 pounds. It was eating a lot of extra food that caused the gain. Walking is good for your health, but burns very few calories.

Hernias can be extremely painful, or you can go a lifetime without even realizing you have one. They aren't deadly, so I'm not sure how yours is killing you. There are many, many surgeons capable of fixing a hernia. It's a very routine surgery. If the one you talked to is unwilling to operate, it may well be from fear of lawsuits.

I agree with Grim that obesity causes hernias and WLS can reveal them.  However, I disagree that hernias are not deadly, they can be in certain situations when left untreated and get pinched between the muscles of the abdominal wall the intestines can lose blood supply and become necrotic.  That can be life threatening.  

I don't understand, "I NEED HERNIA SURGERY to keep from dying" and "if I have surgery now it'll KILL me."   Sounds like either way the outcome is the same. 

I think you need to get a second opinion from an unrelated doctor at a different hospital and see what they say.  Take care of your health first above all else.  It sounds like you are under an extreme amount of stress and stress can cloud your judgement.  I'd advise you to get some psychological help, too help improve your mental health too.  Good luck!

It seems your plan is to sue someone - perhaps your bariatric surgeon from 12 years ago - for the hernia that was caused by the fall and the pothole?  I might suggest reaching out to a law school for help on this one.   

the surgeon did nothing wrong.  it was not there and then the morning after the fall the hernia was there.

Not sure why you need to show that your WLS was a factor.

It sounds like you want to connect your surgery with your fall (and thereby the hernia) and have something related to your WLS pay for your hernia surgery? But if your surgeon did nothing wrong, who are you trying to blame?

I'm confused here.

I can't type it all out due to pain.  I've had 19 operations since age 2.  other people would have ballooned up to 500 lbs.  I've been into health foods since grade school and I was born in the 60s when other people my age WERE NOT EATING LIKE THAT.....only older hippies were.  I gave up red meat 30 yrs.  no salt since age 16,  etc. 

I can't believe how judgmental people are.  one guy said it's all my fault and I did this to myself.  I will NOT be replying to any 1 person since I can't.  I'm in tears since I've just been bullied on this site and if I wanted this I would have gone to craigslist.

after the car accident FOR THE FIRST TIME I STOPPED WALKING ON A DAILY BASIS.  you have NO idea what I went through.  after 2 hrs I could not talk and it felt like my jaw was broken due to neck damage.  my discs in back are OBLITERATED.  my calf was ripped somehow and every time I walked I felt my Achilles or something in there ready to rip.  ins would not cover an MRI of calf.  I already got put through so much radiation from other MRIs that I'm now facing cancer again. 

I don't owe anyone such an explanation.  ALL I asked for was some HELP.  I hoped that other people "like me" would have understood and "got it".  if anyone can help look up the info asked for,  great.  if not,  please don't make fun of me or bully me. 

I have had hundreds of days where my limbs are burning and numb and I just want to cut them off. 

when I was young I had fat genes in me.  I ran around outside for hours every day and was still fat.  then I lost the weight and kept every ounce off until my foot's bone broke.  I had to walk on a broken foot for 3 yrs w/o ins.  then I fell on the ice and my back was shot forever.

if you have anything bad to say,  please take your attitude to church and pray to God for help to NOT judge other suffering beings. btw,  I was walking outside for 2 reasons when I fell in the pothole.  1.  I needed to walk around the block for my own health.  I can't walk as much as I did before the car accident,  but I try to at least do this.  2.  I was checking on some stray kittens a block away to see if the cat rescue groups I CALLED IN rescued them yet. 

I walked on Saturday and my gut feels like it's going to rip open.  my hernia is in the stomach/pouch.  I have no car and can't drive and have no way to get back to the dr but they read the results over the phone.  even the surgeon said he would not perform surgery in the situation I'm in now.  it's too dangerous here in this community.

I've also had another appt with another BARIATRIC surgeon coming up in less than 2 weeks.  I'm super smart but am so disabled from killer chronic pain all over my body.  I was born with or had many, many accidents and my whole body is broken. 

if anyone finds the DIRECT CORRELATION BETWEEN A HARD FALL ON CEMENT CREATING A HERNIA IN THE STOMACH/POUCH please let me know.  otherwise I don't need and won't listen to more ridicule.  I did find other info but am too terrified to read the technical stuff of "what could be" and I also don't understand most of it.  20 yrs ago I fell on the ice where this community had no lights or salt down.  loads of people fall in this  hell hole.  I did LOADS OF RESEARCH for the lawyers.  I just don't have the body to do this anymore and reached out for a friend or kind hearted person to HELP ME,  please. 

I feel bad for you. I really do. But this isn't connected to WLS. A hard fall on cement can cause any one of 10,000 different injuries.

There is no question in my mind that you are badly in need of help. I hope you get some.
