United Healthcare insurance process?

I'm interested in getting the Roux en y surgery. I have United Healthcare Choice Plus. I called my insurance company a couple of times but they were talking to me as if I had to be in a secret club to get information. I'm scared that I will get denied. I have no idea of what to do. Does anyone know the process that I have to take for them to accept my request? Do I have to go to my PCP or can I just talk to the surgeon?

In most cases UHC covers bariatric surgery.  There are guidelines you will need to meet to be approved.  Here are a few suggestions to make the process easier m

Talk to your PCP ask if they think bariatric surgery would help you.   Ultimately, if your ins does need your PCP to refer you knowing they are on board is great.

Go to a free seminar by a Bariatric Surgeon.  The surgeon directory is a great place to start on Obesityhelp.  If you tell me what state you are in, I can give you a link to it.

Call your insurance company again and ask them if these CPT codes are covered under your plan:

VSG aka Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy - 43775

RNY aka Gastric Bypass- 43844

I hope this is helpful to you!

My husband and I both have UHC from our 2 different employers.

his policy covers bariatrics, mine does not.  My company does not pay for it , so it is not an option.

You have to check your own policy.  You should have on line access to read your policy.

Good luck!!!

Take Nik up on her offer to help you find a public info session put on by a surgeon.  The surgeons have ins specialsts in their offices who know more about your policy (or can find out more) that you will ever know. This person will be your new best friend.  Remember, it is your surgeon, not you, who submits your paperwork for ins approval.

It is good to go to a few meetings so you get a feel of different surgeons and thier support staff.  Just get to a meeting and get started   Don't wait for your PCP - the surgeon's off will get your ins info and tell you what you need.

I have had 2 different UHC policies, both covered RNY, but the requirements were different for each. Good luck,  whichever way though swing it,  it's so worth it.

Check your benefit book-- it should be available online. That should lay out the exact requirements for approval, if it's covered.

The requirements for every insurance plan are different. Nobody here can tell you about the specific process you'll need to go through.

You've been given good advice.  Besides the above, call the Customer Service number on your ID card, and ask them to send you a copy of the coverage criteria for bariatric surgery.  This includes the medical necessity criteria and the approval process criteria.  Good luck.
