Goal!!!
Finally,
I've been hovering within a couple of pounds of my goal for months. I'm exercising regularly and really staying the course with my eating. I am now 10 months out of surgery and can totally feel that my habits and behaviors have changed for life!!! I am now at the perfect weight according to body fat percentage, and according to my doctor and nutritionist.
People...if I can do it, anyone can.
A quick question, I too am 5'11" 60 years of age and male, probably closer to 5 11 1/2 but that is neither here or there. I had set a personal goal for myself at 186 which was 150 lb weight loss. My surgeon and nutritionist have never really given me a goal so I was wondering what parameters yours used for 195 as your ultimate weight loss. The reason I am curious is that weight loss (194.5) is still in the BMI overweight category for me and to be considered normal I would need to be around 179? Ohhhh and congrats I want that same pic soon!!! I'm just over 200 right now.
Did it depend on your age, etc? Did they actually measure your body fat? I'm just using the BMI calculator... :-).

Don't put very much stock in BMI. It is such a subjective measurement and only takes into account your height/weight ratio. Think Hugh Jackman as Wolverine....pumped, solid, amazing shape...muscle is quite heavy and I guarantee that his BMI in that state would have had him defined as obese. See what I mean?
For me, I am have bit of a large frame and broad shoulders. I have also been doing weight training with a trainer since 6 weeks after surgery (as soon as my doctor told me I was clear to). So we have been adjusting my goal weight taking into account my increased muscle mass. And yes, my doctor and nutritionist do measure my actual muscle mass. They use the InBody scan machine. It gives a really comprehensive breakdown of water - both inter and intra cellular, bone mass, lean muscle mass, and body fat. It even breaks down muscle mass by body regions (legs, arms, torso, etc).
I am perfectly at goal now based upon
- how I feel (the MOST important gauge)
- The size of my clothing and how they fit (i'm in 34 jeans that fit a bit loosely, and a 42 or 43 in suit)
- My overall health in terms of cholesterol, blood pressure, NO sleep apnea, etc)
- And for actual numbers, my percent body fat according to the body scan is just under 14%. The "normal" range is between 10 and 20 - 10 being a world class athlete, and 20 being on the top end. At 14, I am fit and trim and ready for love.
So only you can determine your ideal weight, with the advice of your medical team. At just under 6' and right around 200 it seems like you are doing great!!! And hey, ask yourself this....if you never lost another ounce, you're still doing pretty damn good, right?
There you go. My 2cents worth...if its even worth that.
