If your non-weight health indicators (blood pressure, A1C, cholesterol, etc.) are more optimal than other Americans'-- which may certainly be true-- then you COULD say "better than average."
However I think it would be more accurate (and less loaded!) to say that you're "smaller than average." :)

You even put in quotes that you didn't really think you were better than others, but people are still nitpicking (for lack of a better word). I didn't read into it too much, and I don't think any less of you, I know what you meant, and all you were trying to convey is that you're under the average weight now, and you are proud, because today's "average" is overweight for most people. Good job. There's nothing wrong with being proud of what you have accomplished.
To the ones that are saying, "wow, that's not a good thing to think or say" , just because she didn't say it a certain way doesn't mean that it means anything other than she is proud of herself for getting that far. Lots of people, *****ally do put their self worth into a number on a scale, post here and get encouragement because they write it in a way where you wouldn't think that is their problem.
Just my two cents! :) (Hopefully a peaceful two cents, lol)
Okay, so I read that article, and I understand where they are coming from. But I don't think you meant to be "that" poster. But I do understand how it could make others feel bad about where they are in their journey. But does that mean we can't brag about our size after hard work? I will keep this is mind when I get down to a good weight. Definitely something to think about.
Words should not hold such power over you. You need to learn to forgive yourself for becoming obese and live from this day forward. I know making peace with my past and forgiving myself is what helps me remain at goal.
