Anybody had a Kidney Stone that Didn't Cause Pain?

I've had a recurring UTI - this is the 3rd time since surgery that it's happened.  There is blood in my urine yet again, and the doctor suspects that I might have a small kidney stone that is surrounded by infection, and the infection is subdued with the antibiotics, but the stone remains and I might be getting UTI's because of that.  I've had no pain (other than a sense of urgency to go pee), no nausea or fever.  They're sending me for a CT scan with contrast to see if there's a kidney stone hiding in there someplace.  Seems weird to me!  Anybody experienced such a thing?  The Dr. said that after WLS I am at increased risk for kidney stones.  I've been drinking all my water, I swear!  Any thoughts?

There are different kinds of kidney stones, and yes, some of them are infectious.  I had them - get UTIs which fed the stones; the stones were infected and caused the UTI to recur.  I never had pain until the end, just constant UTIs.  By the time I was having pain, the kidney was too far gone and it was removed.  When I traced it back, I'd been getting the UTIs for years - long before WLS.  They were just getting more frequent.  On the positive front, my urologist assured me it had nothing to do with weight loss or the high protein diet.

Wow!  I'm sorry you've gone through so much!  Thanks for the info - I had no idea that it'd be possible to not have pain.  I hope you're doing well now!

My and my one kidney are doing just fine.

The only thing that changed was the UTIs totally stopped.  I had literally just made an appointment with a urologist the day that I had a major kidney stone attack.  But up until then, no pain whatsoever.  Be proactive about the UTIs.  They may be nothing, but they could be a symptom of something more severe.

I didn't have any pain with my first stone - just lots of blood in the urine. I needed a stent put in to help me pass the stone. I've had stones that I've passed on my own several times since and they hurt like heck!

I did have one that was on my left side and described as an "incidental finding".  Later I was in severe pain and figured the little bugger had moved and causing a UTI. Nope! I was obstructed by a stone on my right side. I've Googled some articles as well as have been told that WLS can contribute to kidney stones. Years later, I was passing blood in my urine, but no pain. CT scan found a stone that was the size of a nickel and shaped like an arrow head. It might have been the cause of bleeding, might not have been. After cancer was ruled out, I had it blasted. Twice.

It's important to find out what it's made of before anything can be done long term. Drinking a lot of water is recommended so that could help, but I'm not sure it will keep them from forming ever gain. Some people are just stone formers. I'm one. I've had to change my diet based on what causes mine. I'm hopeful, but not 100% sure I'll never have another.

Good luck. I hope you don't turn out to be a stone former.
