Hi folks;

I wanted to let the folks who have recently had WLS know that I have posted a new blog with a few tips and tricks (along with my experience) with having to do business travel after having WLS. I was (like most I am sure) worried about the impact it would have on my journey, but I found with some preparation and a bit of research, it was not nearly as bad as I expected.

Have a look here if your interested in finding out more: http://www.obesityhelp.com/members/bobhall/blog/2016/02/22/b usiness-travel-after-wls-rny-surgery/

Cheers;

Bob

I read your blog, my husband and I travel quite a bit and he is still early out from surgery vs my nearly eleven years.  We are Hilton diamond members and the only food I have ever brought on any trips are protein bars. I don't eat their free crap food.  I don't ask for special meals, I pick restaurants that cater to healthy eating so I don't have too.  I don't cook, I eat organic, whole, gmo's free foods that are raised humanely from establishments that cater to people as obsessed with food and health as I am.  I do eat in regular restaurants sometimes and there I get salads.  I don't eat red meat, very little pork, and mainly chicken cooked in a myriad of different cuisines.  It's not hard to eat healthy even if you don't cook if you look hard enough. I Yelp every place I go to make sure I can eat before I go so as not to embarrass myself.  I had this same eating experience in England, France and Spain last summer and am headed to Johannesburg in May for a photographic safari.  I just returned from Mexico City and ate some amazing appetizers at the Hilton downtown made with native vegetables and fruits.  I traveled to Oahu and Maui and ate incredible tropical fruit salad, whole cut coconuts, fresh meat bbq.  We drove across country on thanksgiving from NYC Macy's parade to San Diego and ate clean whole foods the entire trip.  Life can go on after wls, I drink tons of lemon water and lemon tea, I avoid chemicals and eat clean healthy farmers market organic as often as possible.  My husbands brother owns a humane organic bbq restaurant in San Diego.  I get some of the best turkey imagineable there.  Enjoy traveling, lose the prepackaged lean cuisine and find a farmers market restaurant to enjoy.

Humane organic BBQ? You and I might think of it as humane. I'm not sure the critters would agree.

Thanks for reading the Blog posted - I appreciate the feedback!  You sure travel quite a bit - that's great encouragement for those of us who have been wondering about how to manage travel abroad. Are salads the right choice in a restaurant I wonder? I try to stay away from them as getting protein should be our objective each meal (in my opinion anyway) but I'm sure you have way's of augmenting the protein you don't get in the meal.

Your comment about certified humane organic meat's led me on a research task in google. It's interesting that there is may movements for the humane treatment of animals that humans raise for the purpose of slaughter - that being said, now I've researched it, I do feel it's worth mentioning that there are some production farms that truly mistreat their animals - they are a small percentage of the "producers" out there and there should be heavy penalties for this type of behavior - thanks for the enlightenment on the subject.

With respect to the blog itself, I did disclaim that I'm not a specialist in the topic, but I also argue that there is not a lot of guidance available from the various hospitals that do the surgery on how to manage travel, particularly in the first months / years after surgery. The post was to let others know that they are not alone, many of us travel, many of us have questions - and what I put up there is one guys experience that works for him (me) and has been approved by my surgeon - it may not work for the next person.

All the best, and best of experiences in your future travels!!

Honestly I eat more chicken salad then anything else on earth and by that I mean healthy grilled chicken atop all sorts of different salads. I pick out the chicken first and eat as much of everything else, when I can't get any meat I often get salads that feature fruit and nuts and cheese.  I don't force myself to eat more then 45-50 grams of protein as I am so far out, over 50, and don't need lots of calories to maintain, typically around 1000 a day.  I didn't outline my typical eating because you are new and its too soon for you to consider my plan.  I have learned what works for me, as we all do, traveling is fun and should be seamless in the future.  I just don't want to see you get stuck on packaged or processed foods.

As for the certified humane it came as a surprise to me also, when my brother in law was marketing his business I read all his promos and I had never heard of such a thing.  I researched it like you did and discussed it with him also.  It is a topic I don't like to think about really because I could never kill anything to live and I have reduced my meat consumption to mainly poultry with rare instances of pork and even rarer instances of beef.  I had some raw beef in Las Vegas at Christmas and I think I am good with beef forever now.

Enjoy traveling and wish me luck eating in South Africa in May.  Yes I am bringing protein bars.
