The test is just another fad diet, it doesn't do anything more than the other diets many of us tried before surgery.

If you need to get back on track, get back to basics:

  • 64+ oz water a day

  • 600 - 800 cal

  • > 40g carbs

  • 60 - 80+ g protein

  • Eat protein first and almost exclusively

  • Check in with your surgeon for guidance and bloodwork

  • Weigh, measure, and log EVERYTHING you eat

I am averaging around 85 to 100 on my protein

drinking the water and i have lost 3 lbs this week. I just wondered about this. I walk daily as well. I have had my blood work done, I am anemic and working on getting my numbers up.

5 days of anything means very little. 5 days of cookies. 5 days of liquids. 5 days of whatever.

What will you do on days 6 through 600? That matters. Do whatever you like for days 1 to 5, or just skip ahead to a lifelong, sustainable diet. I know, it's really, really hard. I get that, believe me. But sooner or later, that's what it comes down to.

My best advice is, track your food. Weigh every morsel. Try to go as close to zero carb as you can until you get over the cravings. It's a lot like detoxing. It might take 2 days or 2 weeks. Things are easier after that.

Protein and fats leave you feeling satisfied. You will eat less, and go longer in between eating.

Tracking keeps me on track. It gives me a calorie budget. Otherwise I would gradually be eating more and more.

I will continue the shakes of course. I will bring this up at my WLS meeting tonight. I had broth is am and a jello so far. I am not that hungry yet. But I am sure that will change. Thanks for you replying and giving me advice. I will have my protein and Ive already been cutting out the carb intakes. Which I got bad headaches from the withdraws.

Protein shakes are good early out from surgery when you physically can't eat enough protein. At 6 years out, you should be able to eat plenty of dense protein to get 60 to 90 grams.  A 3 ounce piece of meat (about the size of a deck of cards)  averages about 23 grams.  Shakes will go right through you and not leave you feeling satisfied.  Eating dense, whole food, meat will fill you up and keep you full longer so you won't want to eat between meals. You really don't have to suffer with liquids only.  If you eat meat and non-starchy veggies exclusively you will lose weight.  The five day pouch test is just a fad diet for WLS patients.  You need to get out of the "diet mentality" and change the way you relate to food.  WLS patients need to focus on meat and veggies for the rest of their lives to remain successful.

Good Luck!

I gained some weight back three years after surgery and went back to my surgeon and nutritionist. Both told me no more protein shakes.  I would never do the five day pouch test.  I keep my calories at 900 when I want to lose.

So if I keep my calorie intake to less that 1000, i should see results? i just got back from my endocrinologist and my metabolism is shot and which is the reason why I have gained the weight.

My metabolism is also shot and I believe it is pretty common after this surgery.  Cutting to 900 a day takes off one pound a week for me.
