At Goal And Falling! WTH?

One thing we don't think about when we are losing weight is balance.  Stop and think,  how your body has contorted to adjust carry the extra weight.  Your arms hang differently to balance you to keep you from falling. You lean forward and don't stand straight, because of all the weight in the front.  Our hips, legs and knees bow in a very un-natural way.  It's no wonder we hurt from head to toe.  You have walked like this for YEARS.  You know no other way to walk!

So when you lose 100-200 pounds or more all of the sudden you will go to take a simple step and fall flat on your face.  Your body is still contorted to walk with the extra weight and is so out of balance.  As you are losing weight address your posture and work on correcting your balance for the new you.

Take a look at this photo and you can see how badly the neck, arms, pelvis and legs look...ouch.

Thanks for this article. I've experienced this several times. I thought it was just me!

Your welcome.  We are so careful to now fall and break something and then fall and do so after we are at goal?  My surgeon clued me in during one of our follow ups. Thank you Dr. Nagel!

Our center of gravity definitely changes after losing massive amounts of weight. After attending many bariatric seminars/conferences/support groups, I noticed that a lot of us walk strangely after weight loss. I spent lots of time walking in front of mirrors and practicing how to walk correctly after losing 200 pounds. I wanted to blend into society and not have my gait make me stand out.

I also found I kept leaning forward like I used to due to all the weight in my middle!

Thanks for the info! I feel like I'm walking a little differently, sometimes I have to crack my right hip while walking & I definitely hear the pop! So weird, never had to do that pre op.

If this continues I would see a specialist.  They have special shoes to help you get your hip back in line.  You don't want this to lead to a hip replacement down the road.  It may have been happening and you didn't feel it or hear it due to extra padding....  Keep us posted on how you are doing

Since my surgery I've had several people comment on how my gait has changed.  Luckily, they have all been positive comments, but it's weird that they have noticed and I haven't, other than the fact that my joints feel so much better.

5' 5" tall. VSG on August 4, 2015/ Starting weight 239.9/ Surgery weight 210.9/ Current weight 137.4/ Goal weight 140/ No longer overweight, now a NORMAL weight. Now that I'm at goal, it's time to move on to maintenance!!!!!!!!

I find that yoga is helping me a great deal with posture and balance, and making friends with my body now that it is 100lbs lighter (rny 14 months ago)
