I went to see the surgeon Thursday and he said in good health other from being overweight and I'm young so he said I don't need the ekg and the other thing I just need the blood  should I be happy about that ?

Sure, it is less money for you and your insurance to have to pay.  There is a lot of unnecessary testing done.

I don't know...being overweight I think I'd want confirmation from the EKG that its all good. I mean, he hasn't even seen your blood work yet and is calling you healthy? What if the blood work tell a different tale?

I didn't have any tests other than blood tests. I think you are over thinking things.

I would never have surgery without an ekg...I had never had one and it was discovered during my preop testing that I had a heart condition.

Every surgeon I've met since has always done an ekg for precaution.

I think it's a good precaution.  Kind of odd he is willing to take such risks.

Most surgical clearances include and EKG and blood work, even if they aren't for this... The surgeon isn't the one who usually does your final pre-op clearance it is usually your primary care Doc, at least in my experience... so they may want an EKG. Not that an EKG is a big thing.

The rest of it is a precaution.  I had a much more serious surgery a couple of years before my RNY... at almost 400lbs and they only did an ekg and bloodwork.

Hi Biglady904,

I think you should take the ekg and any other test your Primary Care Doc recommends you to do before clearing you for surgery.  "young People"  can have far more issues so i have no idea what your surgeon means.  Get all the test done if not for him for your peace of mind. just my opinion.

At 400 pounds, it would be risky, reckless even, to have surgery without an EKG.

Why does an EKG bother you so much? It's the least invasive test there is. You lie down, they tape a few leads, and you're done.

Have you recently had an ekg? If not and it were me, I'd want one. When I screen patients before surgery of any kind in my hospital floor, part of the protocol is seeing if the patient has had an ekg in the past year. You just never know how anesthesia will affect you.
