Surgery out of state?

So I have been starting the process for gastric sleeve with a local metabolic center and just found out yesterday that my insurance will not cover the surgery. I am so disappointed. I  need this surgery, I've tried most everything else to no avail.

Anyway, in my state to self pay i would have to pay the total cost before surgery and we just can't do it (we live in one of the most expensive states as far as cost of surgery goes). I need to find someplace that is both cheaper and has different payment options, which means out of state.

So I am looking into surgery out of state, and I was just wondering if anyone here has any tips or anything for me. I'm not sure even how this works as I know there are several appointments needed with various care professionals before the surgery. Do people who do surgery out of state just fly back and forth a lot? How does this work, anyway?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me! :)

Many people go to Mexico for their surgery.  The pre-op and post-op is handled by their local physicians.  It would probably work the same with going out of state.

One risk that you are taking is whether your insurance will cover any complications of weight loss surgery.

Check with your insurance on that.

As White Dove said many people  go to Mexico, as I did. All the pre-op work was done upon my arrival and surgery was the next day. You miss out on a psych work up and the nutritional consultations are by phone, skpe or e-mail. I spoke with an internal med Dr and sent him an extensive medical history before I  traveled.I also spoke at length with the surgeon before I booked with him.  Your own Dr could of course order your pre-op work  if you preferred. Most companies that deal in medical tourism make it very easy for you. They answer all your questions and so-ordinate everything perfectly. I was in the hospital 48 hrs and then stayed in a recovery house for another 48 before traveling home. If you have any questions I can answer for you please ask and good luck.

Many can handle most appointments at home and just do the pre-op appts the day or two before surgery.  One thing you will want to factor into your costs is that many surgeons require their patients to stay local for up to two weeks if they live more than an hour away.  Another thing to consider is having your surgery out of the US.  The costs are tremendously lower, but definitely do your research to find a surgeon with a stellar reputation (with Americans vouching for them).

When you say "at home", what do you mean? the appointments would be with the nearest bariatric center or would the appointmets be over the phone/online?

I have thought of Mexico and even though I have read of many people having the surgery done there (and a specific doctor comes up a lot) I am really nervous about having the procedure done in Mexico. I live in a state bordering Canada so it's also quite a trip to get to there. Currently I am looking into Dr. Umbach in Las Vegas. Just been wondering what info I would need to know when  looking into surgery out of state so I can see if this is even a possibility for me.

I didn't know about the staying local for two-ish weeks though I suspected that might be the case.

Thank you everyone for your help and please keep the replies coming! :)
