Fit to Fat to Fit
I refuse to watch because ultimately the guy will lose it fast and easily I'm sure. There fore reinforcing the idea we are all just lazy slobs that have no self control. Like the other poster said he has none of the underlying issues that goes into becoming obese. It will be just another way to fat shame us all.
I know I sound judgmental. But I just feel like that is where this show is heading, the minute I saw the previews.
"I know I sound judgmental. But I just feel like that is where this show is heading,..."
ME TOOO!
And this is why I am so guarded around the "naturally thin."
The thing is they have no clue. No clue how much more bicep/tricep and back strength it takes to do something simple like a plank. My gym, WHICH NEVER FAT SHAMED ME, watched me struggle for 2 years to plank. I get my Tae-bo certification and talk about how MY CLASS is going to be the class for EVERYONE with several modifications and it hits them "OH! We need to be more inclusive to all body sizes"
Then, recently there was a planking workshop where someone took a foam roller to assist those that have difficulty with planks. Start with it just beneath your knees if you are having trouble planking. As your strength improves..move that foam roller down.
All I could think was..WHERE WAS THAT MOVE 2 years AGO!
What about mental things...like hesitatng before going into narrow areas (between cars, tables people). To this day I beg my husband STILL to hold the car door for me so I do make open it too wide and ding his paint. Still my psychological nuttiness. The fear of being judged.
And the thing is. I doubt this show will play to the MO persons strengths. The MO person is going to seen on treadmill, running slowly, and looking like they are having a heart attack. They will never show the MO person lifting weights..HEAVY weights. Because I have learned, MO people are really super strong. They have to be from hauling around the excess.
Nor will they show the MO person outstepping (in terms of technical moves) a skinny person in step class...because MO people cant have coordination and know where their feet are (since they cant see them anyway..snicker). Right?

I was just thinking of that pig when I read this. There is a special place in hell for people like that who judge people without really walking in their shoes. How I wish she could not have lost the weight but something tells me she would have had her mouth sewn shut before she let herself stay fat. I wish she had.

I watched that too and there was one with a fat person and a skinny person, the fat one tried to lose and the skinny one tried to gain it was actually pretty good because it at least showed that it was just as hard for the skinny ones to gain as for the fat ones to lose.
I assume this new show will also have trainers and nutritionists to control their food and activities. I'm sure I would have done much better trying to lose weight if I had those at my beck and call 24/7. Instead in my case it took being deathly ill not a method I would advise!
The fitness trainer gained 60 pounds and then lost it with his client to feel what it was like to be affected by obesity... umm not even close buddy.
Gaining a few pounds and losing it on TV does NOT allow someone to feel what it is like to be affected by obesity and its related conditions: type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, GERD, the list goes on. It does not replicate the effects years of excess weight has on your joints, or the side effects medications and treatments for obesity and related conditions has on a person. It does not take into account the emotional toll stigma, bias and bullying some affected by obesity face. I liken this show to the "fat suits" Dr. Oz and others have done on TV... it minimizes and diminishes a disease.
There was a show that had wealthy people do things like work at McDonalds for a couple of days. It's easy to do anything for a short time, when you know you can go back to your other life. Doing it day in and day out, year after year, is an entirely different story.

I've only seen the first episode (in Utah) but I'm in the minority here - I actually liked it. I thought the trainer made a lot of good comments about how he could now understand how one could feel hopeless once you gain past a certain amount of weight. And he even admitted that he'd started out prejudiced but realized that it was a lot harder than he realized to have the self esteem to change when you were obese.
If someone were willing to gain weight in order to help me lose, I have to admit it would make me see them in a much more favorable light. Most naturally thin/fit people have NO CLUE what it's like to fight constant hunger and food cravings, but once they get hooked on the junk food wagon they can experience it at least to a tiny degree.
I don't think it's any more exploitative of fat people than The Biggest Loser, and the approach is a lot closer to real life than the extreme workouts they do on that show.
Of course, future episodes may change my view!
