Dental Problems

This comment is NOT directed to the OP.

But I find it "odd" that there are quite a number of WLS patients (post-op) that seem to want to contribute any little medical/mental/social malady to their WLS.

I dont get it.

I do, however like to blame my superior health on my WLS - does that count?

That's not passing blame, it's giving credit. Giving credit is always acceptable.

Valerie. I love this post!!! Wish there was a LUV button. I have tried so many times to explain how ones health and life is literally ruined by obesity, how one does not realize how limited they are MO, and then one gets their health back and the world "just opens up".

For many reasons- I dislike this fit2fat2fit show..but the fit got that got fat became depressed, MO ruined/caused difficulty with his wife, friends and family, he became depressed, settled in with (I think I could be ok with this "junk" food and being 40 lbs overweight) at month 2, was puking in front of his kids, couldnt play with his kids.... The hour long tv show spent 5 minutes on teh above.  What they really needed was a WHOLE SHOW on this aspect alone.

I would like to think that now [at and maintaining goal for a year] I am mentally healthy in teh sense that:a) I recognize my food addictions, b) can evaluate food addictive food against a healthy standard, c) know the happiness that comes from being healthy (e.g. able to meet and exceed reasonable physical challenges...wear pretty clothes) and put it against the 5 second happiness of junk food and d) know that my success helps and inspires other (i.e. my husband (who thanked me last week for getting him healthy) and my gym).

I am training for my second half marathon now.  Back at 275 lbs when they wheeled me in to surgery....I didnt even have the hope of finishing a 5K heart attack and stroke free...

Totally agree - Not every single thing that comes up in our lifes ties directly to our surgery.  My PCP is always reminding me of this when I have a health issue.

BTW - I was also told that scid reflux and vomiting were the most frequent casues for tooth decay.

For the same reason I hated before surgery that  "any little medical/mental/social malady" was because I was MO.

I went through a period of time in my 30s (pre-WLS) in which I had 4 cavities in a year.  It was unheard of for me and I was genuinely shocked.  My dental hygiene had not changed; I brush and floss daily.  My hygienist stated that sometimes women go through hormonal changes, which can affect the teeth.  That was almost a decade ago; I am about five years postop now and haven't had any dental problems since.  I'd seek a second opinion, especially if this is a new dentist or practice.

I have never had a cavity until I got my surgery in 2005. Now when I go to the dentist, I always have not one but multiple cavities. Just today I was informed that I have 13 cavities and in need of two crowns. Is anyone else experiencing issues with their teeth? I was never told that his was a possible side effect from the surgery.

what is the time frame for developing these cavities? 6 months? I just find that hard to believe.

Have you been taking your vitamins, esp calcium and vit d?

When I was 14 a new dentist opened his practice in our town.  He charged $5 per filling and that was about half of what my regular dentist charged.

My mother made me an appointment with the new dentist.

He checked my teeth and found about 40 cavities.  He started filling them that day.  He injected Novocain into four different locations.  He was not gentle with the needles.

I passed out in the chair, probably from shock.

He made me another appointment and wrote me a prescription for Valium to take before his appointments.

My mother did not want me to take Valium and made an appointment with my old dentist.  He told us that there were tiny spots on my teeth that were not cavities and did not need fillings.
