When can I switch to solid vitamins?

I'm 6 weeks out of my rny surgery.  I was at my 1 month appointment with nurse and dietician.  The dietician said to the class that we could now have normal vitamins.....not chewable or liquid and to be honest...I'm really nervous!  Will it get stuck or clog my pouch if it doesn't fit through the hole to the intestines?

When did you switch over?

Thanks friends!

I don't know about the RNY. I had the sleeve. I was nervous about switching back to my multivitamin, so I broke it in half to begin with. I'm taking the normal pill again.  I've been back on it for a week now and no problems.  Actually, I'm feeling better because I'm getting my vitamins again. I'm 4 1/2 weeks out from surgery.

I've been robbed! My grandbaby stole my heart!  She just raised her hands and I surrendered.

The ASMBS recommends chewables or liquids until 3-6 months post-op.

I never had to take chewable or liquid vitamins.  I was swallowing whole pills immediately after surgery, while still in the hospital.  Just make sure you swallow one pill at a time and not a whole handful.  I've never had a pill get stuck.

Thanks MsBatt,

No, nothing wrong with liquids or chewables, but they make my teeth so fuzzy and are too sweet for me.  I rather just swallow with a little water.  They are more expensive too.

Yikes about the corn kernel!  Everyone seems to be one extreme or another....I just am nervous to take a chance!

When I had surgery in 2001 my surgeon had us on chewable multi vitamins, but had me on all vitamins by 6 weeks. The only problem I had was that I was taking so many vitamins, I was full just from those.   I use topical patches now and don't have that problem, but when I do have to take pills I still have to space them out because of the feeling I get (full).

Go slow when taking them and take them early, before you eat or you wont be hungry or feel like you can get them down.

I took whole pills from day 2 in the hospital.  I only take chewables because I prefer them.

I had a lot of problems with pills getting stuck in the early months. Start will smaller ones or cut them smaller to see how you react initially. Also, it helps to drink coffee or hot tea before you take any, and space them out as much as you can because they can fuse together on the way down.

It took me upwards of four months to be able to swallow a pill as large as the calcium. Even the petites gave me trouble. I'm about 9 months out now and can finally swallow two at the same time.
