What was the weirdest, strangest, desperate thing you tried to lose weight?
I remember my mom going to "Fat Ladies Club" (that's what she called it) - lol! I'm sure it was TOPS or something similar to the pay-and-weigh places we have now. If you were the highest loser for the week you got to take home the little rhinestone traveling tiara. I'm wearing that thing in all the pictures of my 6th birthday party.
I vividly remember her doing the Ayds Candy diet (what an unfortunate name, right?). I soooo wanted to eat those when I was a kid. Should have been the first indication that I was going to be twisted about food
But the grand prize goes to my father. In the early '80s he was going to this place that injected some form of sheep cells into your body to help you lose weight. Whatever it was, of course it didn't work long-term.
Even worse I remember the chant we used to do at the end of the meetings:
"I am an intelligent person, I will control my emotions and not let my emotions control me. Every time I overeat in private, I will remember, my excess poundage is the for all the world to see what a fool I've been."
Crazy.
My mom and I were members for years. I did get to my goal weight. Then got pregnant with my first baby and that was the end of that. My mom was a member for more than 25 years and never got to a goal weight.
I also remember the days when the people who gained weight had to where a pig nose and be a pig that week.
5' 5" tall. VSG on August 4, 2015/ Starting weight 239.9/ Surgery weight 210.9/ Current weight 137.4/ Goal weight 140/ No longer overweight, now a NORMAL weight. Now that I'm at goal, it's time to move on to maintenance!!!!!!!!
I never went to a meeting - just heard about it. I am so sorry you went through it.
The abuse never ends for some people. I was channel chasing and saw on TV last night - some Biggest Loser program - that the people who lost a challenge had to eat an unhealthy food - 2000 calories of mac and cheese, etc. It was terrible to make those people eat anything like that. The tv producers should be arrested. I can't stand the exericing that they make the people do - I suspect that many are destroying their knees and backs with what they are doing at their high weights. That level of desperation is difficult to see.

OMG I loved the Ayds Candies!! Of course I ate them without actually dieting too. So many diets, often attempted multiple times. Mind you, some of the diet pills were pretty rad too! Lol. I remember being so high one time that I went to the bathroom to pee, saw a spot on the wall and then cleaned the entire bathroom! My house was never cleaner.
