Upset with Care

I called to schedule my 2 week post op appointment with this group of PA's and NP's who do follow up care for my surgeon (and several other surgeons). My post op appointment was scheduled without me being told. It's scheduled for a day that does not work for me due to being a nurse who works at night. And it is scheduled for not 2 weeks but 4 weeks post op. ...There is a reason we do 2 week post op appointments in the medical community and not 4 week post op follow ups...it's to catch a problem before it's a problem. Yeah, I'm a nurse--but I've never had bariatric surgery before. I told the receptionist on the phone that I needed a 2 week post op and she said there was no appointments available. I ended up emailing their corporate office. Overall, I'm upset....has anyone had this problem with their post op appointment before? I don't know...I may be making a bigger deal of it than it is because I'm so tired from this surgery...

A month is a long time for follow-up after major surgery. My surgeon's office has you come in within a week... then if it is all OK come in at the one month mark. Take a deep breath, and good luck figuring it out.

I had my surgery on a Wednesday, got out of Hospital on Friday. Was told I could drive once I hadn't taken any painkillers for 24hrs. Last painkiller Friday night at home. After that Tylenol. Waited until I saw the Doc Monday afternoon, and then drove after that.

This is what I had - a one week and a one month post surgery checkup.  Hope they do a better job of patient interface for you in the future.

I would be pissed off. They shouldn't have done your surgery if they can't handle the patient load.

I recently had a pretty complicated abdominal surgery due to two hernias and an internal hernia -- over 12 incisions -- and my post-op was scheduled at 4 weeks without my input -- at the Cleveland Clinic.  My post op for my RNY was at 3 weeks.   I don't feel my care was negligent, but what do I know?  If you are unhappy, you've every right to address it.

Sounds like you need to contact the surgeon and find out what's going on. I've never had someone make a post op appt, for me. I'm always told to make it myself since they can't possibly know my schedule. Sometimes it's a bit longer than they ask for but certainly not 2 weeks I would advise them they need more detail to theur system because it is not working well.

It sounds like they're overbooking, but do you know for sure that you'll be seeing the surgeon at your 2 week followup? For me I saw a PA at my 2 week/1 week followup. It was mostly to check my stitches & see if I needed any more care, he asked a bunch of questions so I'm guessing based on my answers he could figure if I needed to see the surgeon right away otherwise I saw the surgeon for followup a month later.
