No Soda (diet) - Fact or Fiction?
Well I don't have a pouch, but in the beginning my Dr. didn't have a problem with me drinking carbonated drinks. He said just let it sit awhile b4 drinking it, mostly to get rid of some of the carbonation. I sipped on it, as the months went by I didn't need to have my drink sit for awhile & now I can drink it with no problems. I usually have some kind of carbonated drink, usually sf red bull & sf monster drinks a few times a week/day depending on my mood.

I waited six months to drink carbonation. Now I drink the occasional diet soda, but it was never a problem for me. But I never drink it with food, nor would I. That is one of the easiest ways to regain.
FYI-a frothy protein shake is nothing like a carbonated beverage. Carbonated beverages are made by dissolving carbon dioxide under pressure into water, so the carbon dioxide expands as it is released. A frothy protein shake is not even comparable.

The froth will die down if you let in rest a bit in the refrigerator. I have up soda pre open, I've drank one sip since ( was the only fluid at the time) I was very uncomfortable.
I do use a straw though, I stay away from artificial sugar. My only vice is sweet decaf tea. I can't give up everything!

I should post a the picture of the giant gastrogadtric fistula hole that I had in my stomach. Now I am not saying it was caused by carbonation but it certainly didn't help. I was in the pro diet soda column. Now I know not to do what they warn against. Yes the pouch is open on both ends but in a perfect world we are standing straight up and the carbonation can escape but we sit and lay and pockets of carbonation can get trapped. Just like gas pockets get trapped in other parts of the body. Some have no issues with it. I never reached goal. After a complete reconstruction and bowel resection I have gone below goal, feel great and avoid carbonation.

I hate my protein shakes in a blender or mixer. The frothy is horrendous -- so for me, a ninja is something I never ever use.
That said, I was a huge diet pop drinker before surgery. I quit in October 2013 and haven't gone back. Just as Laura said, I have watched the habits of people in my support group who have either regained or never reached goal -- and drinking soda is a common thread. It's completely anecdotal evidence, but it's just not worth it to me.

As h.a.l.a. B said -just be careful that you do not get the full Sugar version. One time I considered myself being good by only getting a so-called diet soda from Mickey Dee's WHEREAS EVERYONE ELSE WAS EATING WHAT i USED TO EAT. Knew it tastes pretty sweet but as soon as my blood sugar dropped I knew it was not diet! Was very uncomfortable for awhile.
The same thing with the so-called Sugar free ice coffee's, I was one time given the full sugar version-blood sugar dropped!!! I'm hypoglycemic! Taught me a few good lessons. Usually kids work at these places and really do not know how important it is to give the correct drink. Makes me realize "I'm" accountable for myself not anyone else. So now if I do want a diet soda, I buy it in the bottle OR CONTAINER. If I want a sugar free coffee, I buy it with just a little cream and I can add my own Stevia. It's all about accountability for ourselves!
Good advice on here. I used to have way too much diet soda. it didn't bother me, but it was a lot of caffeine, sinc eI prefer cola. I have been off of it completely since May and I have to say I feel much, much better over all. My joints feel better. I don't know if that is a true cause and effect, as it is just anecdotal. It is alsoa gate way food item for me, since I associate it so strongly with fast food and other nuritional disasters.
Also I spent way too much money on it. By eliminating it from my diet, I could afford to up the quality of my protein.
