Don't underestimate the power of a good hormone dumping. Being a guy, you may not have even considered this yet. That hormone dumping as the fat sheds can cause melancholy or even true depression. I suggest talking to a doc about it. The good news is that there are plenty of treatments.

As the daughter of a Marine, and as a therapist, yes Marines cry too. It takes true strength to cry - strength not many people have.
True depression doesn't care what positive things are in our life. True depression also manifests more as apathy, irritation, or anger...commonly so in men. I was diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder years before I was obese, and the rapid weight loss since June pretty much kicked me off my feet. I was severely and profoundly depressed. I stuck to my counseling and also stuck to my plan. I've messed up a few times since surgery, but I get right back on the wagon. Even if you don't go the medication route, counseling can help tremendously. Don't blame yourself for it; no one ever chooses to be depressed.
People do make it hard with food. I've lost friends since WLS, but that's because I've started cutting the fat from everywhere. I no longer have time for crappy food - and I also have no patience for other people's BS. The holidays are a nightmare working in healthcare, because there is literally food everywhere. And, you know, it's always crap. Plus, people keep trying to shove food down my throat. A coworker brought a plate of cake and put it on my desk after I told her I didn't want any. A volunteer almost started crying when I wouldn't eat her homemade pie after she offered it to me multiple times. People, me not eating your stuff is not a personal insult, I promise. I
The truth about depression is that sometimes we have to fake it until we make it. Keep doing what you are doing. Make sure not to avoid people or places. Keep taking care of yourself. Seek care or counseling out. There are lots of reasons why that people have covered.
Hang in there, Gary! Don't forget lots of us are following the same path as you. :)
I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!
It is not that we have so little time but that we lose so much...the life we receive is not short but we make it so; we are not ill provided but use what we have wastefully. -- Seneca, On the Shortness of Life
Your body may also still throwing off anesthesia, as well as fat soluble hormones.
You are only 4 months post surgery. I would ask you to call your surgeon or PCP, tell them how you are feeling, make an appointment, and have your vits, etc checked. You may be going through a period of mental and social adjustment, but your vits could also be low. Low Vit D and/or Vit Bs can contribute to low mental state. Plus, how much sun do you get now, don't people in the northwest, rust not tan??
I just had my 1-yr check-up and now need to take addl Vit D, which was low. Now taking Vit D supp, in addition to the VIt D that is contained in the calcium vits.
Are you able to attend Bariatric Surgery Support Group Meetings in your area?
