ok I'm abt 9 years post-op and I've gained abt 50lbs back. Most of it being my fault but some cuz of emotional and stress eating cuz my marriage was falling apart and I was going thru a divorce. Other reasons cuz of severe iron def anemia so I'm exhausted allot. I do like to exercise though and I know how to eat right. I lost 5 lbs but tht was it I stalled. Any advice on safe ways to boost metabolism? I tried a prescription diet pill but it just made me jumpy and always sick to my stomach. My divorce is final and I want to move forward w my life! I want the thinner me back tht I had worked so hard to get! I want me back!--- Lorie

The only way to boost your metabolism is to increase activity. I don't mean exercise. You can work your butt off in the gym for an hour, but if you are sedentary the rest of the day, it won't help much. You need to be active as many minutes of the day as you can. Take stairs, not elevators. Park at the end of the parking lot. Use an exercise bike while the tv is on. As much as you can.

But boosting metabolism is pretty hard. If you want to lose weight, it's a lot more effective to control the food that goes in your mouth. Weigh your food, log every bite. Control your calories, and you can lose.

I heard that weight loss is 80% food and 20% exercise.  So your biggest opportunity is to get your eating back in track.  It seems like you have done that, GREAT, because you cannot exercise your way out of a bad diet.

If you have not done Weight training, you might want to try it - it will build muscle mass, which will burn more calories the entire day.  I usually agree with Grim 100%, but his time only 80% because the weight training may give you the boost you are looking for., and everything that Grim said will give you even more benefit!

I suggest you begin with a trainer and tell them specifically you want to build muscle mass and ask them what your plan would be. Also, you might want to post this query on the Exercise Forum and get additional input.

Eat small frequent meals. Go back to your first steps, eat slowly. Reduce portions, try Zumba it's great, and burns up to 800 cal per hour.
