Goal Setting
"This is probably a stupid question, most of mine are."
First of all, you MUST stop talking about yourself like that!! I firmly believe that negative self-talk played a big part in most of our lives pre-op. Learning to be kind to ourselves is imperative if we want to succeed in our journey to better health.
That being said, my surgeon wants his patients to get to a BMI under 30. Other than that, it is up to us. I set my goal based upon the weight I felt good at before I became obese. I did set small goals along the way but did keep my end goal in sight.

Smaller goals on the way to the big ticket goal. That's what I was wondering about. I'm in sales and that is the method I was taught by my mentors. Thank you!

I used the same logic with my clothing. I love Levi's 501 jeans. I had a pair of size 8's in the very back of my closet as my "goal jeans". But I always kept a pair one size smaller than I currently wore in my closet, too, as I was losing. It kept me motivated to fit into that pair along the way.

My surgeon wanted me to lose at least 65% of my excess weight. If I ended up still at an overwieght BMI with resolution of my comorbidities (hypertension, sleep apnea), he would have been happy with that too. I ended up losing 100%. He did not set a weight goal for me, so I set one at 150, which puts me right in the middle of a healthy BMI for my height, which is 5'8". So far I am maintaining at my goal weight, though I am only less 1 year and 10 months out.
For me, setting smaller goals was psychologically more fufilling than starting out stating that I wanted to end up a certain weight or be on solid food by 1 month post op. My first goal was to be able to get in 64 oz of water within the first week post op. That milestone allowed me, according to my surgeon's plan, to progress to stage 2 of the eating plan. I used each stage of the eating plan as a goal to attain.
