Well, first is depends on how far out you are from surgery. Protein shakes work at any stage. I prefer to eat my protein... Meats, chicken, fish, tuna, turkey, steak. Nuts is another source of healthy fat and protein, as well as dairy.

I believe it requires significant amount of exercise as well as protein. Also depends on your age how much muscle you can regain. Any complete protein should work. Aside from protein shakes I like salmon, turkey I think has more protein than chicken. I am sure you could find a list on line of highest protein foods and probably one of the easiest to digest proteins. I wish you sincere good luck with your challenge.
