Hi There,

I am wondering fi I am getting close to dehydration. I have a severe cold, had a sore throat for days. Over the last couple of days i've not been able to get all of my fluids ins. Much less food. I haven't been eating either. I've only had 22 ounces today. I'm tired, I have someone dark urine.  but I can't tell what is cold and what is dehydration....

Help!!

Dark urine is a sign of dehydration. You need to drink water. You may not feel like it, but force it in. If your throat is really sore or there is another reason why you can't drink, they can give you fluids in the emergency room through an IV.

I hope you recover soon, sounds like a miserable cold!

Unless there's a physical reason why you can't drink, you just need to suck it up.  I'm afraid this forum seems to encourage people to go to the ER and that somehow dehydration after WLS is a medical emergency.  NO, it's not!

Having WLS doesn't make us any more precious than a normal adult and it's really only children and the elderly or the very sick who should go to the ER for fluids as they go downhill fast.  A normal healthy adult can just get on and drink what they need - a few days of not eating and drinking less than usual is NOT a medical emergency.

I was instructed, at my RNY 30 day follow-up, to immediately go to the hospital for 3 days of i.v. fluids because I was in acute kidney failure. I was walking 3 miles a day at that point, drinking 65 oz. of water a day and eating 700 calories a day. How can you in good conscience, tell another human to suck it up, when they might be in a legitimate medical situation?

The funny part is you should know better than to dismiss something as severe as dehydration. If you actually have 11 years, people may listen to you, but this "tough love" approach to a simple question was offensive to me.

When someone is this wrong about something, I will not let that slide. YOUR TURN.

well, weren't you just the special snowflake .

In light of your post, everyone who has WLS and gets a cold should dash off to the ER for fluids.    What part of EMERGENCY room don't you understand?  Love it when you newbies turn up with your horror stories to school the vets or anyone who gives sensible advice.  You've picked on the wrong chick, Gary

You've convoluted yourself into believing your opinion matters to anyone.

Now,now children. I am new to the support sight and have been discouraged by some of the apparent 'bickering' to downright rudeness that some contributors volley back and forth. Surely people can express their opinions without having to worry about being attacked. Even if a person is right, there is a diplomatic way and an ignorant way to respond. Lets try a little diplomacy!

Please don't let my lapse into infancy dissuade you in any way from this site. It's a great place, filled with many smart people. I am overly sensitive to some things I guess and need to try and be more diplomatic.
