3 day pre op diet

Hello!

My first time posting so forgive me if this is a common question. Haven't found much about it I'm the search function though.  :)

I began my 3 day preop diet yesterday and was wondering what kind of experiences others had with it.  I'm only allowed clear liquids (tea water apple juice jello and broth etc).  Did it affect anyone's energy levels, we're there any other symptoms you experienced that I should be on the lookout for?  I was a little concerned with the sodium content in the broth (even the low sodium kind) but it's the biggest help when I'm really hungry.

I was reading that surgeons sometimes order the liquid diet to shrink the liver...is this true?  I researched before choosing my  doctor and hes supposed to be one of the best in my area but he never explained this. It's got me sort of concerned as liver complications is the biggest worry I have.

Also any tips for surgery on Monday on what to bring or how to be more prepared?  Thanks!!

My pre-op was 14 days, consider yourself lucky. My energy wasnt affected, just my mood. Perfect excuse to be a ***** Other thing I experienced was bad breath... Not sure if you will after only 3 days though.

Yeah the diet is supposed to shrink your liver...but there's a lot of variance between docs in pre-op requirements. My doc showed us footage of a healthy liver and a non healthy one.... There was a huge difference between the two... Left enough of an impression that I complied.

There could be a zillion complications or none. Do what you are told to prepare and trust the experience of the surgeon you chose.

Hospital provides just about all you need. I'd encourage your own pillow for comfort and to hold against your stomach on the drive home. I also had my hubby bring a small step still to help me get into his SUV.

Some say it shrinks the liver, some say it makes the liver less slippery, and thus easier to move while working on your stomach.

Regardless, you'll need to do this after surgery. And the first 3-5 days on a liquid/low carb diet are really, really hard. Many people describe it as detoxing. It gets easier after that. And I'd rather detox before surgery than after, with all the other discomforts you'll have.

I did not know about clear Isopure Protein (got it from GNC****il I had to get a colonoscopy.  It was great - low carb, low, cal, tasted like gatorade, not thick.  You can check on line to see what the sodium content is.  It has 40 gms of prot in 16 oz. My local GNC had 5 flavors - I had the green apple because I could only have clear, non-red, liquids as prep for thee colonoscopy.

I now use it from time to time.
