That "a-ha!" moment
on 11/25/15 8:55 pm
so for the last month basically ive been busting my rear at the gym almost daily. I do about 3-4 miles on the bike and then weight training for about 30 minutes. The thing is, weight loss has all but stopped for me. So I was emailing with my nutritionist and I found out im eating wayyy too few calories. She said I need to be getting near 1000, and im getting around 600. 1000 sounds like SO many from where im at, but she said im putting my body in starvation mode, and weight loss will stop..which it has. Im going to have to start looking up some recipes where I can get more calories without adding a ton more carbs and sodium. Anyway, that was an eye opener for me today. Hope everyone has a blessed Thanksgiving!
Almost everyone new to exercise stalls. It's water weight from inflammation caused by working out.
I sure as heck wouldn't eat more. You want to burn the fat you've got, not slow it down by eating more calories. That kind of advice is for average weighted people, not us.

I was eating about 600 calories and burning off about 300 of them. So my body was running on 300 calories and it wasnt burning anything for weeks. I increased my calories yesterday and did my normal exercise. This morning when I weighed I lost 1/2lb...sounds pretty good to me! She never told me to increase portion size, she told me to increase calories and since she works for a very reputable bariatric surgeon, im going to trust her. If after a few weeks things seem to be going wrong ill change but that 1/2lb was very encouraging to me. I twas the first in almost a month.
I was burning more than I ate for months. I was actually in negative calories every day, and never went into "starvation mode."
Lots of people do crazy things when they've stalled for a little while. We see some that eat a candy bar, the stall breaks, and they tell others that candy bars are magic stall breakers. It's just coincidence, like with you.
The only thing that breaks stalls are honest tracking and patience. You are certainly welcome to eat more. But those that do end up in maintenance, we'll short of goal.

A stall at the 3 month mark is perfectly normal. "Starvation-mode" is a myth.

you won't go into "starvation mode" as long as you have stored body fat. Anorexics are starving...you arent
im getting around 600 calories a day and burning at least 500 calories most days of the week. I have had stalls, but mine just broke and ive lost 3 lbs in 2 days. I'm not sure how far out you are, but unless youre closer to the 1 year mark I dont think 1000 cals is a good idea. My nutritionist is pretty.... uninformed about WLS and even she said that I should be getting around 600 cals @ 6-7mo mark.
