Drinking Soda After WLS : Debunking the Myth

First of all, let's be realistic. Life is too short to go the rest of your life without ever drinking a soda again. Don't get me wrong--soda is a terrible thing to put into your body with any regularity. Concentrated sugar (or the chemical sweeteners in diet varieties) mixed with phosphoric acid ... Read Full Story

Thanks for posting this Kathy. Not only does it debunk the 'stretching' myth, but also offers all the right reasons for limiting our diet soda.

Personally soda was a terrible addiction for me.  I drank about 12 cans or more day.  This surgery was the one thing that motivated me to stop.  I haven't had any soda for 7 years.  I refuse to have any for fear I will end up right where I left off.  I think with soda it's all or nothing for me.  It took years for me to even stop craving it.  I am so happy to have kicked that horrible habit and I am afraid just one sip would make me slide back.

I will admit that I drink other carbonated drinks.  I will have an occasional Mike's Hard Lemonade (I don't like beer).  Those are quite good.

I had soda every day (Coke Zero) before surgery. I had a tiny, tiny taste since at about 6 mos out.  First, it hurt!  A LOT!  Second, it tasted awful.  I can easily go the rest of my life not drinking soda.  There are plenty of other options that actually taste good.

You can have my Fresca when you pry it from my cold, dead hands.

I used to drink so much diet soda. I haven't had a soda in four years. I tried a sip of soda and my pouch was not happy. I am also afraid that going back to soda will lead me to old bad habits.

It may be different for RNY vs VSG patients, but I drink Coke Zero maybe 2-3 times a week.  I buy the small bottles and drink them when I crave something fizzy and sweet.

I asked my surgeon why there's so much conversation about not drinking soda, and he said it has nothing to do with causing complications after surgery.  Some people have problems with the carbonation that causing bloating, belching or gas.  He said that if it doesn't bother me, go for it.

I didn't try any soda until after my first year.  I wouldn't recommend it for anyone still in the honeymoon phase. And I'd never recommend drinking any non-diet soda.  It's just empty calories.

This is a good article.  Thanks for posting
