I hate running...I mean seriously, ******g HATE it! But I still do it...because I like to hang out with the other runners in my family and because after all these years I can actually do it. And some times - if the weather is good and I"ve got my music - I actually enjoy it (after the first mile, the first mile is ALWAYS a *****!).

I'm in my 50's and my knees aren't the best after 25 years of being overweight/morbidly obese. So my "running" is more like a a slow jog.

I would ask your ortho doc what he/she thinks of you running. If you get the green light you could always try a Couch-To-5K program to get in shape slowly. Several people on here have followed that program and have done well with it.

I used to run a lot, but gave up about 7 years ago when I started having injuries that were impacting my health more than running was helping it.

For me, exercise is about keeping fit and not wearing my body out before its time (I'm 53). I have no joint problems at this point in my life, and I am grateful for that.

I walk my two large dogs 4 miles or so daily (and believe me, they do not saunter) and I cycle during the summer months. I feel great ...

I completely get what you are saying! :-)

I used to have dreams of running. My whole family are runners but it wasn't something that I ever did. Until my son was born and then I started to run once he started daycare. I ran only on trails (with soft mossy earth so that my knees didn't hurt) and it was glorious. Seriously! The most at-home I've ever felt in my body - even though I was still obese. I lost weight through diet & exercise and got up to running a distance of 7k. Then life came along - fulltime work with lots of hours and I allowed myself to stop running. I regret that. And now - I am dreaming of running again. And jealously looking at them fly past me.

I think inside you might be a runner - just find a place that feels safe, where you won't hurt yourself and RUN!

Wow, I am so glad you posted that article. My biggest fear is that I will not be able to do it. Because all my life Ive never been active. Ive always hated exercise because it hurt. I would always give up before it got easier.

Maybe after my surgery I will be more like Michelle. If not with running, maybe cycling, or dancing.
