Pre-Op Liquid Diet - Feeling Awful

I'm scheduled for surgery on Sept 29 and am on day 4 of the pre-op liquid diet.  I feel horrible.  I feel hungry but ok for the first 2 days, but yesterday I wa**** with a brutal headache that won't go away, I'm nauseated and have no energy.  I'm "eating" protein smoothies, Premier high protein shakes, blended soups, milk and greek yogurt.

I'm getting nervous about the surgery now.  I can't function like this and if this is how I'm going to feel after the surgery then maybe I'm making a mistake.  I work full time and have 2 school age children ... I lead a very busy life and can't live it if I'm feeling sick and have no energy.

Please tell me it gets better!

How was your eating before going to liquids? Had you eliminated processed, white carbs from your diet? And caffeine? If you have to detox from carbs, you're going to feel crappy for a few more days, same with caffeine if you were a caffeine drinker, but it WILL get better!

I think it's fairly common to have headaches and feel generally crappy when starting the liquid diet. I was irritable as hell. I'm surprised my hubby didn't make me live outside in a tent...lol. You'll feel better soon.

What you're feeling is perfectly normal.  My doctor's office told me to expect to feel pretty crappy for a few days before my energy came back.  I think it lasted 3 or 4 days for me, then I felt normal.

Hi Jennifer,

I'm right there with you - my surgery is Monday the 28th and I am on day 4 of my liquid diet. I was feeling much worse than I am now... and what helped me was taking my multivitamins. It helped boost my energy quite a bit.  Also, make sure you're drinking enough water!
